just make up angled box to fit on top of it 10mm plate touch the boiler top with a fan in it will hold the heat and no messing with the boiler

I do fully understand the principle I have made many log fires and wood boilers and waste oil burners etc

With the amount of heat this is pushing there would be NO chance of this being a cold flue !!
but even with it stone cold and actually freezing ambient temp, it has no issues and draws well.

that why i said this you are not touching the boiler you are adding a thermal lump to the top with a fan if it get too hot to touch it will work well will need to be a metal fan though

if it gets hot it will work you are adding a thermal mass to it I.E big lump of 10mm plate in the shape of a box then drawing out the heat with a fan

I have to agree with the don't do it sentiments

Basically boilers are type approved and given a gas council number that all that version share. altering any part that is related to combustion or gas is illegal and potentially dangerous

Doing it the way i have said it not altering any part of the boiler that is related to combustion or gas just adding a little air to air heat exchanger to it

It's your house your boiler you can do what you want .just watch out for C.O. and don't let the gas man in or he might cut you off in the road if you don't let him isolate it.

Hmmm tricky one this, i see where norm is coming from, but would i take a chance with something like this? Probably not, knowing that if something did go wrong, however unlikely, the end result could be tragic not only for me but the rest of my family as well.

Its always the unforseen stuff that comes back and bites your ass, however much you plan it out. Thats not to say you wouldnt do it, and it wouldnt work fantastically and be perfectly safe. But it might not, and that would mean, in the words of some obnoxious millionare, I'm out.

I think the amount of heat you'd get from it would not be worth the hassle or the potential risk. You'd be better off ventilating the space around the boiler (as it should be for the flue to work properly) as that should allow excess heat in the casing to get convected into the room. I doubt if you'd cool the gas too much to stall the draft but modifying flue ways is not a good idea. if you put a fan in to blow heated air out it will need to draw its air from somewhere so you'd run the risk of causing flue reversal especially if you duct it into the kitchen.

I don't think norm is talking about altering the boiler in any way so no nasty fumes to escape
if I read it right its simply standing a construction on the pretty much a heat sink with a fan to blow the heat around

Remember not all boilers run on GAS! In fact if things continue to go as they are going with our home supply and falling oil prices and rising gas costs not forgetting the rise in biomass and the economy of coal for unit of heat Natural gas very might well be in its final decade as the first choice fuel for home use

I'd be concerned at the potential for dragging gases back into the room from doing this. Like i said, i understand where norm is coming from but for me, at least, the potential pitfalls are big enough to make me shy away.

I've worked on commercial burner systems for over 10 years, and did the old industrial gas acops course on which we covered accidents that have happened etc. Invariably you get the ones where someone has done something daft like wound a regulator open or bypassed purge timers etc, but there were also some where everything seemed to be fine and one tiny detail had been overlooked. With something like co poisoning you wouldnt know until it was too late. (case in point would be the family in greece where the children died a few years back because of boiler faults)

As i say, that would be my feeling and i certainly wouldnt force my opinion on anyone else, just adding my 10 p to the debate!
