You need a UKPIA forecourt passport, plus even drilling is classed as hot works, so youll then need a hot works permit. And thats only after you have checked vapour levels are safe.

I misunderstood when you said it was for a garage. I assumed it was a repair centre not a filling station. I can understand the need for extra safety considerations but I think its a bit overkill for 4 holes 
Makes me laugh when you aren't allowed to use mobile phones but you're allowed to open and shut car doors thus activating switches and also start engines!

The evidence suggests that a mobile phone cannot cause a spark. Also that there is no known case of a forecourt fire caused by a mobile phone in the UK, E.U., or the USA (and no confirmed ones anywhere else)
It's a tosh rule based on urban myth. There is far more danger from the HT system on a petrol engine. Anyone ever come across leaky rotor arms/dist caps? Ok, those bits are enclosed, but which bit of a mobile actively sends sparks to the surrounding area (or anywhere)?
Re Hitachimad and the hotwork - like Wozzaaaaahh, I assumed you meant a mechanics forecourt, not a filling station. I can't quite see the danger myself, but it's always a pleasant surprise to see how little common sense many laddies let loose on the tools have.

Not according to the Mythbusters tv program. There's never been a documented case of a petrol station fire directly linked to mobile phones (at least not in the US)
Apparently the biggest risk is from people getting back into their vehicle to get their money etc, sliding on the seats and building up a static charge. When they get back out they earth themselves and the resulting spark has been known to ignite the petrol vapour !
Having said that I still wouldn't use my mobile, it's sods law that I'll be the one who proves you shouldn't believe everything you see on TV
i have bin shocked from my fone previously it was wet tho but who says u cant have walked in there from the rain outside the forecourt on the fone the chance of that shock at hand height or head height ignitin fuel wud be so circumstanstial its hardly worth the bother but theres better things to moan abwt than that like the cost of fuel your supposedly burning with the mobile fone !!!! h aha

In theory its not sparks that could cause the trouble, its the microwaves from the phone (but at less than 0.5watts cant see it causing trouble). So i guess the use of a microwave oven should be disallowed on a garage forecourt as well.

Absolutely right! If I remember correctly, the guy who they interviewed said he was originally misquoted which led to the myth in the first place. Also, we can't lock our pumps on like the American ones. That fire dept video showed the guy pulling the nozzle out of the filler neck with petrol still gushing out as the handle was locked on. Love that program!

I just meant that each time you open your door it operates an electrical switch which could potentially spark. I also get static shocks off my door on a regular basis, some quite big! My mate once had a vauxhall viva which had an under-bonnet fire, where did he choose to pull in????You only need one guess!

Nob head in sainsburys petrol station the other week gets out of his car with a fag on the go. 4 blokes simultaneously called him a ****er!
Reminds me of the time when I was at uni and we were 5 up in a mate's Panda when it ran out of petrol. We had to push the damn thing 500 yards uphill to the petrol station, whereupon we all thought we deserved a fag so we sparked up! Suddenly the penny dropped so we hastily shuffled the 5m onto the pavement to carry on
