I'm thinking of one of these, SB15 blast pots with the semi-pro gun, for use with aluminium oxide abrasive for cleaning up rusty tractor bits.

Need to check my compressor to see what its CFM etc is, but seems to be about one of the best non pro ones about?

I'd like to buy a Clemco one cos i like nice tools, but alas i'm not going to

What do we think?

Don't bother. 100quid will get you a Pressure fed one. Only down side is you need aleast 12FAD

I've got one of their suction blast guns and it is far superior to the Clarke one, but not as good as an Ebay blast pot.

Do you have the clarke one? much good? Will that take ally oxide?

It's not Clarke as such, but mine is identical to it. (The Clarke has a different nozzle).

I use it on a daily basis and am very pleased with it. You're welcome to come and have a look if you're in Sheffield at any time.

I've not used ally oxide, but have used glass grit, J-Blast and glass beads with no problems.

Paul, hang on in there and wait for a decent Hodge Clemco - they do turn up occassionally as bargains. I waited ages for one, but they were all 'up north' if cheap. Eventually a complete outfit turned up in Tunbridge Wells (20 mins away) that looked practically unused and had the helmet, breathing filter, and loads of spares - turned out it had been bought for one job then sold on - I paid £500 iirc and when I collected the fellow gave me 3 tons of bagged grit. A truely solid workhorse that should last ages.

the smallest pots clemco do is the mini pot. it has a 6mm jet fitted and runs on a minimum of 80cfm

Ally oxide tends to run a bit expensive for blasting large bits unless you are containing it for re-use, but after a while it becomes very dusty.

As RTBComp says go for one of the pressure pots there way better than suction feed.

First off get a pressure pot bearing in mind any clemco will need a road compressor to drive it.

Media choice is a personal thing, I used nothing but ally oxide 60 or 80 grit which when you start will appear crap due the the large grit size after it's broken down a bit it gets into the pits that rust likes to hide in and fetches it out. The beauty of ally oxide is each time it hits something and breaks you get new sharp cutting surfaces. It's also flipping heavy and delivers a nice wack, held at the right angle you can blow flakes of rust clear off rather than eroding them. I had an extractor fan which took away grit so used it had turned to dust so estimating how many times you can reuse it is difficult, but I believe you'll find 1 big bag will do all your tractor bits as long as you work out a system of containing the grit.

You'll need quite a few bags of J blast which is going off by the 3rd re-use.

I have two blast rooms one set up with 90% glass bead 10% virgin alumina. The alumina is used to give a quicker cutting edge when blasting. Only use this room for non ferrous metals.
The second room is for ferrous metals and I use a chilled iron grit. Great recycleable abraisive. Price wise not much more expensive than ally oxide but you get less for your money because its heavy. You can use it hundreds of times

Ally oxide you can reuse about 4-6 times before it starts dusting to much.

Garnet 2-4 times.

Copperslag (J blast) is an expendable abraive as is stone grit and recyled glass grit (crushed bottles) but you can usually use it a second time.

140 cfm??? I manage quite nicely with 14-16 in my blastroom for scooter parts, any more they'd fly away or get damaged.

I use J-Blast & glass grit until it disappears as fine dust, looses its sharpness quickly, but fine for ally prior to bead blasting.

the hodge clemco mini pot runs on between 80 and 90cfm with a 6.omm nozzle at 90 psi ive ran one for over 30 years. the 3mm nozzle runs on about 12 to 28cfm and is quite adequate for doing small resto s if your not in a great hurry

The guy we have in doing mobile blasting used glass, its expendable, and no real issues with using it outside, just like sand.

He uses 2 grits, coarse, for paint removal etc, and fine for mill scale. Doesn't even bother reusing it a second time.

When we had one at work, we used to use the chilled iron, same stuff as used in blasting line setups, good stuff.

using chilled iron in pot u need one with an inspection hatch . the condensation inside makes the iron shot rust together and eventualy blocks the pot a good hammer and get your hand in to remove it off the sides

Yes I'm using a 140cfm three tool road compressor for my Hodge Clemco, but I don't think it is working anywhere near it's capacity
