I don't see how this could work, if your machine pulls for example 20 amps on start up it will still pull 20 amps through the fuse no matter what

One of those urban myths, that everyone has to believe is true, even when the evidence presented PROVES otherwise.
A 13a fuse will not handle any greater current with a 16a connector in line, it can't, it won't and it simply doesn't! 13a down a cable will always be 13a!
I think there are now 3 if not 4 qualified sparks who've commented on this, providing this information, but your mate must be right!
Cable sizes and lengths are related to voltage drop!

Which over the suggested 'fly lead' fitted with one of those fancy round sockets everyone thinks are specially reserved for caravans is negligible as you'll still be using 1.5mm in most cases as 2.5mm is a pig to fit, 4mm is a dark art in a 13a plug top socket, fnarr fnarr..
16a leads should also be used with 2.5mm cable.
Electrics - leave it to the professionals!

The only possible benefit of one of those flyleads is that if your machine is fitted with a 16a plug you can also use it from a 13a supply, simple as that.
@Kent , whoever told you that lead gives you extra amps is genuinely clueless.
I dont think I stated that it gave you extra amps? If I worded it as such anyplace then its my mistake I said it helps in preventing blowing 13amp fuses and it certainly does. Its probably connected to the fact that its harder to blow fuses working on a longer extension lead also ( I suppose someone will tell me that's rubbish as well - but it aint I can tell you this because being a mobile welder I do it all the time). Now I suppose someone will tell me that's rubbish also but am more than happy to demonstrate the fact by winding my 200 amp 240v stick set right up I can instantly pop a 13 amp plug fuse- put it on a long extention and its way harder (not impossible just harder) though YOU DONT GET MORE AMPS AT THE HOT END the lead effectively leaves the dial ineffective after you turn it up past a certain point (depending on lead length and mm2 of the cable) This is just straight forward experience based on advice given to me that WORKS
ITS A BUFFER to prevent so many fuse changes (which can really wind you up at times) effectively NOT a booster

This is what I'm trying to say to my mate, this thread has been a help but know he wants to do it. I'll make sure I win this argument!
your welder must be a buzz box from the sound of it. as a long old extension lead will drop the voltage avalible to the machene, if a buzz box isnt given the volts it cant draw the current and it just welds even more rubbishly. use an inverter and it'll pop fuses more redaly the longer the lead.
with an inverter you need to be set round the 100 - 110 A mark if you have spare fuses 120A a maybe. if on a good lead.
