And all the old manufacturers going back to the dawn of time.
I think the fact that stoves are enameled has, over time, caused the term stove enamel to be used for vitreous enamel too.

Or maybe 100 years ago or whenever they started baking wet paint finishes, they stole the term?
Maybe stoves were vitreous enamel, but it was just termed as stove enamel and when baked wet paint started (when was that?) They used the common term for the wet paint system too?
I don't know.
All I know is baked wet paint systems have been called stove enamel for a VERY long time!

Vitreous Enamel is simply a thin layer of glass fused at high temperature on to the surface of a metal.

The word enamel comes from the High German word ‘smelzan’ and later from the Old French ‘esmail’.

Stove enamelling is a traditional baked on paint finish.

It offers a hard protective engineering coating in a wide range of textures and colours, including smooth, hammer and spatter finish.

Vitreous enamel, in some quarters, is no longer called that. I have had many discussions with collectors and suppliers about their porcelain signs.

It's not just collectors either, manufacturers, suppliers and dealers refer to porcelain signs. Many are not familiar with vitreous enamel.

Some use the phrase porcelain enamel which sounds like a bet each way but often refers to this definition:

Porcelain signs are thin sheets of metal coated on all sides with a durable glass, bonded at a high temperature. These signs were then coated with enamel to further protect them.
