Forgot to add, make sure anything you add does not short the welding voltage to the chassis as the feed motor and it's mount need to be isolated from the chassis that is why there will be some nylon or similar spacers/bushes between the feed unit asy and its mount bolt/screws.

Thanks very much for the info! I managed to get hold of a euro torch fitting today, looks like it'll be fairly straightforward to fit it without having to move or alter the feed mechanism, and the rubber grommet from the old torch fits nicely around the new fitting so hopefully that will work nicely and prevent any shorting on the chassis like you said Mike.
I'm still wondering though if I need a solenoid valve or not? Today, after I'd removed the old torch, I blew into the gas inlet pipe and it was sealed i.e. no air coming out from the open gas pipe end that was formerly connected to the torch. That suggests to me that there is already a solenoid valve somewhere along the way. Maybe I'm mistaken though, would there be anything else (other than random blockage) preventing the air getting through?

I would think on a machine that big that it would have a gas valve. If you follow the pipe connection on the REAR of the machine (with power off!) then following it through the machine you should come to the gas valve !
When you have done the converting to euro socket then before powering up, meter between the machine frame and the welding power connection that is on the feed unit. Set meter on Ohms < 200. You should not get a reading between them. If you do then there is a problem with the insulation/isolation between the feed unit and the machine.

I think the one I've got the parts from today was a Murex. Big industrial thing it was, but I'm sure I've taken all the parts i'm allowed to take already :P and ended up paying £20 for them!
Ah so the valve might be near where the pipe enters the rear of the machine? It's a bit of an awkward spot to investigate, I might have to get the investigating mirror out for that one! That was the pipe i blew into, i take it my little test wasn't conclusive then? Oh yeah, I was looking at the euro torch connector, and it's got 2 small electrical wires coming out of it. I can see where they connect in the machine but I was wondering if it matters which way round they get wired up as the ones on the connector are both the same colour.
