Gives me a chuckle when a man condemns a top executive from one of the globes biggest company's who earns millions, then goes back to his 4ft wooden posts set in a bag of concrete and writes a 10 page essay on a forum . Now don't get me wrong here as i graft everyday myself and would never look down my nose at anyone doing anything but do you get just 10% of the irony of your beef with these big earners . Oh and btw the posts you concreted in would of lasted 10 times longer if they were put inside plastic bags going in the ground and tied 6" up the posts.

I concur, but think the posts would be better on metal feet. As for how clever are some of these big boss types….most are obsessive, well they need to be to get that far. Suspect some are on the spectrum. Of the ones Ive met, and Ive met a few….you can tell they are very clever….really sharp, think quicker than most and also know who to learn from, listen too….

Add psychopathic to that list and I might tend to agree. Problem is, they are self serving greedy capitalists more concerned with their own personal enrichment and advancement than they are with DOING THEIR JOB. I wonder how much salary and bonus the heads of the various water companies are giving themselves while the infrastructure crumbles?

Interesting parallel and benefit scroungers certainly have no moral authority to complain about anyone who is actively contributing in society - trades or management.

Boeing (specifically) is a good example of where things start to go wrong. Whoever started that original company I suggest would be horrified by the scale of rewards leaning so far towards pen pushers while at the same time, the fundamental ethics of safety and quality are dropping like a stone. Something is clearly going wrong (we know what it is, DEI and ESG) and that is squarely a problem of poor management.

So my "complaint" is not about the level of pay in itself (Ronaldiho/Verstappen/Musk worth every penny) it is more about what these stratospherically well paid managers are doing which is of positive benefit to the product. Be that clean water, affordable utilities, banks gambling in stock markets or safer aircraft.

We all get to experience the result of failures and yet "bonuses" are still awarded to these greedy corporates no matter how bad they are at their jobs.

re plastic bags , some 12 year ago I put in treated posts for my gates , went overboard and used some thing like 9" sqaure , used decent ex dod food plastic bags , a few weeks ago noticed gates were leaning , now propped up , as both posts totally rotted !! not impressed , and will use thick steels to replace.

re wages and bonuses , I realised many years back "working " as in grafting for a living is a joke ,self employed till retirment myself, we are just slaves, a guy was talking to me about his business , also self employed ,he was getting letters from tax man and was behind with accounts although he was busy enough and turn over good , I suggested he get in touch with the accountant I used as the fine he might get could be more than they would cost , Oh no I will get Bil to do it when he is next down, turns out bil worked for a company in the city ,in his own words just a regular nine to five accountant , well that will cost you then....oh no he does it for free he has no money worries on a goodsalary , geuss what lasts months bonus was , now I had no idea and plumped for stupid monies ,"£1100" ha he just smiled , he showed me his email ,re bonuses. £70,000 .
thats when I realised your average Joe is being taken the rip out off. Yes Obviously there are some that are worth their weight in Gold there is absolutely no question about that at all, we all know that ,but a lot just get on the gravy train and milk it with out a damn for the consequences.

The problem isnt the post in the ground, they go where wet and exposed to air at ground level. But the main issue is that the wood used is poor quality, and then pressure treated with a product than no longer protects the wood or stops fungus growth at ground level because the envirodogoodersciencehse bods said so!

Bonus when employed by large corporates is usually calculated on both personal and company performance…this changes once you reach the dizzy heights into salary, bonus and share options.

Though 70k sounds to a normal wage earner huge in the large corporate accountancy firms would be fairly normal for a high performer. This is a very competitive market place, if you want to retain good people, and stop them migrating to business finance director type roles, they need to pay them well. My BiL is one of these accountant/ business consultant types, when he left Price Waterhouse pre COVID he said top guys were making 500k. Hes now a poor contractor quite happily selling his days at 2k plus vat. And is never short of work!

Fair point…..but its also about influence……..if you go to school and most around you are butchers, bakers and candle stick makers, there would be a high percentage chance of you following this route.

Alternatively had your folks deprived you of sky TV, and sent you to an obscenely expensive private school, you would have being influenced differently, where top university followed by a fast track graduate position in the city would have been far more normal.

When I was at school we had to take tests in all subjects at the end of the 3rd year to see which ones we would take to O level, somehow I managed to come second out of about 90 in our year in the Biology exam, but as I'd already decided I wanted to work with electrickery I didn't think Biology would be much use so dropped it.

That was my thought too. I considered the idea of bitumen etc. but was worried that it would simply trap water. So I stuck the ends in a bucket of Cuprinol and let them go naked.

Wrong thread except the op made some assumptions about me as if to suggest this was another example where I don't know what I am talking about. As it happens I have had my fill of corporate types and venture capitalists. I did not come out from those experiences well. They are sharks. I am more of a dolphin....

Very valid point, this is why when leak testing new gas process pipework with nitrogen they add in a trace of helium. You can then detect very minor leaks by taping up flanges and sniffing/measuring the helium.
