cant beat knipex, had nws cutters hated them within a day

That's what I use too, may not crimp them perfectly, but hey, it's an electrical connection. Works for me, don't have the need and it ends up getting screwed into a MCB.or similar...

If you only do the odd termination you can use anything, I used to massage the end of the ferrule with my pliers before tightening down on them with the terminal. But often now when I’m doing a job I may be doing hundreds of ferrules a day and the security and low effort of the compound action crimper is worth it. I don’t want the end coming off if I’m pulling the wire through a panel either.

I wouldn’t get hung up on colour codes, they are pretty meaningless unless you are in an industry that demands you use a certain colour for a particular size - I’ve got German types but that’s only because I half inched them from a German company i was working for

I've got the same crimper, works fine for not much money. Can't see the point spending more, I guess if your a panel builder it might be worth spending more to get a tool with a longer life but who knows.

Yeah - can’t fault them really. I bought them to chuck in my laptop bag as I don’t want to be carting my “decent” (ie expensive!) ones around with me but they’ve been brilliant. The crimps seem just as secure as with my expensive ones, you certainly can’t pull them off by hand and once they are tightened up in a terminal they won’t be going anywhere.

well if we're all taking photos, here's mine...

like I said no big brand name chinese specials (Vanow??), work fine though, they've done everything I needed to date. Frankly they're not that stressed as a tool, so not sure the big names brands at 150 quid or more are really justified for occasional use, more for if you're in the guts of control panels day in day out.
Personally I really like the ferrules on stranded wires, definitely takes the doubt out of the wee stray strands causing potential shorts.

And several times I have seen faults caused by 1, screw terminals cutting through fine stranded wires or 2, screw terminals holding the insulation and only a few individual strands of conductor just happening to be in contact with the signal path. Both faults that appear to work just long enough to get the original tec. off site.

I went for the 4 jaw ones,
The 6 jaw ones are nice but sometimes to wide to fit into some terminals in a hex not a square.

- i.e the ones that squeeze them up evenly around the outside and create a symetrical end, but none of the 'big names' do them? The big names all do the style that mashes em up from one side??

I used to use a set of less expensive equal-all-sides bootlace crimpers that made a sort of Christmas tree of the ferrule, it was hard to use as the crimp then had to be levered out of the tool. The crimp-in-the-side type often have a serrated surface on the other side to grab the strands.

I'm a bit sad I'm that if rewiring a standard plug I'll often fit a shortened ferrule to the L, N & E so it looks "factory". Generally means cutting off the insulation from the ferrule as I don't have any uninsulated ones.

Years ago I was supposed to wire a small crane after all the mechanical bits had been assembled. I was too busy so my governor asked to borrow my crimping set and promptly gave the job to a geriatric welder. Lovely bloke but when it came to power the machine up it was as dead as a doornail.

Turns out he thought you slipped the ferrule over the unstripped wire end and the crimping action made contact through the insulation!

Expect to pay an extra tenner but if possible get them with the 6 jaws I have both and 6 jaw ones leave a nicer crimp.
