If porting the JWST over to Fusion is doable, it might even form part of a workflow Sketch to get the gross shape, Fusion for the finished product and then possibly into CAD.

I can't see that ever being easier than just drawing it directly in Fusion. Now you've already got the JWST model it should be pretty easy to de-draw in Fusion though, as you've already figured out the odd little dimensions, where to build reference geometry, etc, but you are essentially completely re-doing it. Now you've already printed it, what's the point? The CAD has served it's purpose.

1. As part of the workflow I may want to keep using Sketchup for high speed design and thinking things out
2. I would like to remake a number of the elements in the model and clearances/tolerances are pretty tight so the parametric feature is going to be a must especially if/when I rescale it.
3. Yes it is already made but I sincerely doubt I could make it from scratch with Fusion until I have been using it for some time
4. The model and other planned projects may also be created from photographs and while I am sure F360 can do that, I have no idea how

This will be a transition for me and I am not going to stop doing what I do for 6 months while get up to speed with F360. I will need to integrate it into my workflow so yes, in the long term I may discover F360 is better quicker easier etc. but at the moment it is an unlearning process as much as it is a learning process.

The other thing to remember is that I will not be using it just for modelling. If I knew exactly what I wanted, I assume F360 might actually be easier and better right now, even for me. But for example, with say the swage block stand I made some time ago, I used Sketchup for iterative design, very quickly simplifying, modifying, often step changing quite different designs untilI got what I wanted.

Plus of course I have a vast library of everything I have made alrady in my Sketchup library including the forge area:

...and Sketchup is really an architectural drawing program which I assume beats F360 hands down for such applications.

I built my workshop with it and decorated the insides with it too...

It will be difficult to let go of Sketchup so if I can run it alongside F360 that's a win:win for me.

I can muddle my way round most software , and I hate it if I have to RTFM but fusion has got me in a corner.

My main.problem is language example "sweep" or it might be sketching....

That is the issue I am having (or was having). It is non intuitive and you have to learn the program. That is fair enough with such a powerful piece of software but it will require dedication and a fair bit of practice to get up to any sort of speed.

I am not having that issue now because I gave up. The idea was to just knock up a couple of simple models that would take seconds in Sketchup, just to learn the program but that is definitely NOT the way to learn Fusion. I will go back to wading through a list of YouTube tutorials, largely so that I can pick up the language and the underlying structure of this program.

What I found really difficult was knowing exactly what I want to do, exactly how I want to do it but then try to find out how that operation is made by darting in and out of various pages of con-Fusion menus.

Exactly my experience. User friendly it isn't and being powerful is no excuse for that.

I think it is very user friendly but then I was used to GeoMagic/Cubify, SolidWorks and OnShape which all have their differences but work roughly the same way.

I reckon I could show somebody how to get started with it in a couple of hours face-to-face. I think most of the complaints about 'user friendliness' are really about not knowing what it does.

Aye shell is something you want to try, any shape can be done easily.

My lad uses it in Fusion I think. In AutoCAD I'm that old I still type in at the command line rather than use the icons

Lots of things in Fusion have shortcut keys but shell is not one. You can however make up your own custom shortcut key for it if you so desire and if you try and choose one that is already assigned to something it will tell you and not allow.
