I am loving this thread. And the advice is good too. I am swinging between soft solder and silver solder.
Just for clarity, I am not an amateur. I am a time served fitter turner, 40 years in the trade now. I build my own custom motorcycles, adapting frames, fabricating and machining bespoke parts, electrical rewiring, engine strip and rebuild, Welding, brazing, milling, turning, precision fitting but however much experience and knowledge I have I do not know everything and other people's opinions open new avenues of thought. You are never too old to learn and I am always grateful for anybody's input.

None taken, I thought it best to clarify. I didn't consider the implications of giving advice to someone who had no idea what they were doing. You advised from the safest position which is to be commended.

Is it painted or have a surface coating? The green layer looks like copper oxide but hard to tell from photos. As it looks very old, the paint is likely to be leaded, so wear a respirator if stripping it back.. (best wear one anyway.. leaded or not!)

Any form of heating, soft solder included, is going to cook off the paint layer so it will need to be stripped. You could use epoxy and paint over but I dislike it for metal work.
