Brazing repair on copper pipe

To repair a copper pipe with a split I used to cut a piece of pipe(same diameter) in half then solder this over the crack in the pipe.

Since this is steel? the same could be done with a steel pipe but would need tig welded?

I have seen some repair tape that is supposed to be air and liquid proof,i might try that

Looks like you haven't a heat source to solder or braze the stub in question,can you put up a pic of the damaged part then we could possibly suggest a way to repair it when we can see what we are up against so to speak.

I'll get one taken tomorrow mate,and you are correct i don't have a heat source at the moment

find someone wit a blow torch clean up the split steel pipe apply flux and give it a thin coat of solder then as some one mentioned earlier cut a small strip of copper pipe solder that aswell put the 2 together and heat up applying some more solder and job done

oh yes some hot air paint dtripping guns will get hot enough to do the job although a blowtorch will be better and quicker

I have tried to get a pic but it's not very clear,the crack is circled in yellow

if its steel brase it, if its copper solder it ( or braze) & plate is you feel the need... either way you are going to have to dismantle... so why not make it easy & do it now?

JB weld, Quick Steel or a hose clip and some nice rubber tube.

That's true but as i don't have a blow torch or know anyone that has one it's worth a try

If its 15mm plumbing pipe, then wouldnt it be easier to remove the damaged one and simply replace it with new, rather than trying to bodge it with tape?

looking at your picture there is enough good tube left so just cut off the bad bit and refit the compression joint you will only need a new olive

Something to watch for is if it's brazed to the reciever than getting it hot-enough to repair (braze) may cause the OE fixing to come appart, and the tube come away from the reciever completely.
So couldn't the thin-metal technique be used to mig it up (after cleaning properly)?

if you touched that with a mig it would be goodbye pipe

As snooper say's if i tried to mig it then it would just blow it on contact,it's very thin walled pipe

The discharge pipe is steel with a copper coating, seeing that it`s split use silver solder or braze for a better repair.

I would like to retract that statement as I have come across two that have copper discharge stubs today , So raid the kids money box and go get yourself a blowlamp and solder the crack up.

I have had a good scrape at it today and it is copper,so i will get the stuff next week and solder it
