I wonder if it's not worked because I've directed heat towards the nearest part instead of more behind

Capillary flow - the solder will move towards the hottest part, I think?

better off making a paste with the flux by adding a touch of water and painting it round

Don't know about what the flux kit is .

Heat the loosely assembled parts to just past dark red to an almost bright red , put the silver solder stick coated in the flux on the joint and play the heat over the part till the stick melts , wave the heat on it for a few more seconds and the melting flux should have allowed the molten silver solder to flow by capillary action in to the joint . You will likely need to do this at both ends of the sleeve to ensure there is braze on both the broken parts .

Thought … were you able to melt some of the silver solder ?

Thanks to everybody that helped encourage me. I only drilled a couple of holes and it works so leaving it like this for now
