Brush painting

I have a sit up and beg ford i need to repaint.
I have considered spraying it but have lots of other things in my garage i dont want spraying.
I was thinking of brush painting it, buying a decent brush a Hamilton was one i looked at. and the paint i was thinking of was tractor emamel in either black or mabe stoneleigh grey.
I used to work with a guy a sign writer who did his time on the bus companies repainting much of it by hand.
Some of his hand painted signs looked like they had been sprayed.
Now your thoughts on this am i making a mistake or do you think it will get me a decent finish with good protection.
My thoughts are the brush will give me a chance here to make a half decent job.
The collour i would have liked black but thought the grey would look fine and mabe even look a bit smarter than black when brushed.

Plastic sheet everything in the garage that doesnt want painting, can get it cheap enough then spray the bugger

Don't brush paint it - it will look crap! - spraying is the way to go - like Darren says, sheet everything. Get plenty of practice - then have a go!

You can brush paint it, and you can do a good job, but you need to know how (and I can't tell you). Brushing additive certainly helps. Tractor paint in the old days was fantastic. The range of John Deere tractor paints 10 odd years ago was a quick drying lead paint, smoothed out lovely and dry within half an hour. Don't know if you can still get it.

Also, the darker the paint, the more blemishes will show up.

If you can find the lad you used to work with, ask his advice. I know the buses here are hand painted, and they do a top job of it, but no idea how.

When it comes to painting my Spitfire I'm thinking about buying a cheap marquee, you can get the bigguns for less than £100 off the bay and it shouldn't be too hard to convert it into a one time spray booth. Have to wait till the summer though as too cold to spray at the moment.

It is possible you could mop it over after, its been painted but it would need to be on thick enough as your likely to need to knock off about 50 microns of the surface to get a good job.

one of the local paint place was selling a devilblis (hvlp i think) spray gun for £150 + VAT, believe me i was very tempted, but resisted the urge just

I've actually bought myself a couple of Astro Pneumatic Evo LVLP guns. Had to get them from the States (although they're made in Taiwan). I'd never heard of them but they get great reviews on the autobody101 forums and are a fraction of the price of DeVilbiss, Sata etc The 2 guns (one for primer and one for colour) were about £120 inc delivery

Sata's or Devilblis are shed loads of money dam nice spray guns and do a sweet finish no mopping required, i must admit to using a cheap £30 spray gun for painting gates and railings, be plenty good enough for primeing a car, or using spray filler (which to be honest i wouldnt put through a good spray gun anyway because of the solids it contains and there abrasive nature)

I've heard of people roller painting old transits, and making an alright job of it!

I painted an mgb i rebuilt took it down to bare metal then etch primer,then hi build primer,and about 7 coats of cellulose, lots of work but at the time it was my baby. just re sprayed my brava pick up from aa yellow to a nicer red with gun metal lower half,minimal prep done in single garage,celly paint is being replaced very soon so get it quick and dont even think about 2 pack unless you have air fed mask. hand paint enamel is ok but i think you need to wait months to cut any faults out of the finish as it is oil based .i aint no expert and am open to correction on the above,lots of plastic sheet and a £35 spray gun from machine mart. and a water trap in the air line and a mask...

warm the paint on a small primus stove, watch that it doesn't burst into flames, and paint it on as normal. You should find that it goes on thinner so it's more like spraying and the paint 'runs' easier so it fills in the brush marks.

Or add loads of thinners to get the same effect, the thinners evaporate leaving the paint behind.

Do a test sheet first to decide which gives the better finish with your chosen colour.

I've used both method in the past. Plenty good enough for a Ford!

What he said! Thick paint is the killer. It'll take more coats with a thinner paint, but the job will be a damn site better in the end. It's the same reason I stay well clear of one coat decorating paints. you just end up with a thick blotchy mess all over everything.

If you are thinking of hand painting then this site is worth a read. Before I got a compressor I hand painted my Lan Rover with Tekaloid enamel and I was very pleased with the finish. The only places it went wrong was where I rushed or didn't properly prep.

I came across the famous "$50 paint job" recently. A number of people in the States are doing it. Using a roller and Rustoleum, see http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html for example.

I have never tried this but as a youngster I used to be given "car mechanics" magazine & they regularily had articles on hand painting vehicles. They reckoned that you could get a very good finish but that the secret was very SLOW drying paint (coach enamel I think) and the total control of dust. The paint they used - which was sold specifically for this purpose - took 24 hrs to touch dry & they wet everything in sight to control dust.

Might be a load of rubbish but it conflicts with the quick drying thoughts above. You should also note that this was before acrylics etc became common.

Knock up a frame to fit over the car that's big enough to walk round in, cover it with poly and voila, a makeshift spray booth. Make sure you wear a good mask though

or search around for a cheap market stall with sheets...

plenty going for £50 this time of year.

A couple of 10 x 10 feet 'walk-in' stalls (as used by clothes sellers) would give a temporary garage that's 20 x 10 and could be erected or disassembled in 30 minutes.
