Brush painting

I brush paint steel motorcycle frames in japlac, the depth of finish is good, and gives much thicker coverage than spray, which gives it toughness in service which is highly desirable AND it gives a lovely finish.
A friend painted his car with the proper coach paint and high quality brushes and did the prep by the book, and the finish was amazing, having looked at bobbly oem paint finishes on brand new cars for a living at one point (I was a vehicle inspector for vauxhalls), id put his paint job in a league far higher than them. Just on suface finish alone, let alone depth of paint etc.
I think it comes down to its a skill that you have to develop, if you dont research it and get all the right stuff and use it in the correct way, and get a bit of practice, it wont come out right. Exactly the same as welding really...

WoW! Thanks for the input everyone.
I have compresor and several spray guns , i am no beginer to spraying,.
My reason for considering brush paint were the mess and the fact i wil get more paint on the old lass with a brush.
I guess the spraying is going to be easier if a bit messy. i have my old workshop taken over by lathes and milling machines etc. so i am in my only garage now.
Its got tools and a motorcycle two quads and this old prefect.
I just wanted it painted quick and easy to get it protected as much as anything.
But i must admit i have no knowledge of brush painting myself, so i am not sure how it will turn out.
There is another way of looking at this, i could use this job to learn how to brush paint A bit of a trial by fire i admit, but if i dont try it i will never know will i now.

As i said befor thanks for your input, but in truth i am probably more undecided now than i was before.

Robbie, as you seem to have a bit of bottle, why not try it with the brush. At the very worst you'll have to flat it after with the wet and dry, then brush a thinned coat on to shine it up.

Hang it, i am going for it, i am going to try and brush paint it
I will post the photos of the result good or bad
its my time and i can flat it back in the warm weather if i dont like it as you say simon.
i have decided on japlac from focus or homebase.
in either black or british racing green. now i know the old prefects were never brg but its my car and i hate that ludlow green they were back then as standard.
Which collour to chose then now your input again please
And dont worry i wont be asking for you to come and paint it for me

Either would look great but I reckon several coats of black would give a really deep shine...

as already said, tekaloid is what you want for brush painting, my dad did his old sit up and beg pop, he put the tin into a washing up bowl of boiling of boiling water to thin it down then 'slapped it on', it dried without a visible brushmark, it's great paint, near enough all coachwork was done with this years ago....

I would say a good quality Gloss Mini Roller would give you a better finish than brushing. If you take your time you can get a spray quality finish with them. In the past when painting wood I have brushed on for speed and then gone over it with a gloss roller to smooth and even out the paint.

If you roller too fast you can get micro bubbles which might stay in fast drying or thick paint, just roll slowly on the last pass.

Sounds like you have done your research - good luck to you, and don't be put off by the people who say only a spray finish will be good. I did brush painted a car a number of years ago, and the results were excellent, and cost was small. The downside was that the paint turned out to be poor and went dull after a few months. The lesson I learnt was to be sure of the paint - maybe to the extent of painting a test piece and leaving it in the sun and rain for a few months to see the effect. I've heard the 2 pack yatch paints are good, but have yet to try them.

First,i would spray.hands down,no contest but am a boat builder and have been brush painting with enamals and varnish for 20 years.these days i use alot of foam brushes still need to get good ones [yes there are diferent grades of disposible brushes] either way you will need to thin untill brush doesn't pull at all but not to thin i use mix of mineral spirits and pentrol for flow , brush on fast and slightly heavy to cover then dri brush in long strokes to blend. not to many stokes or will be dull. took me 5 years [full time ] to perfect tecneque and touch. start practicing! P.S. i'd just plastic and spray

I have had brush jobs as good as spray but its half **** luck on cold damp days, paint flattens more,its hard on dry days.ive got some bar-dox lead enamal trailer paint in fire engine red the stuff levels like 2-part my father bought 20 glns in seventy's still have some best paint ever made.
