I brush paint steel motorcycle frames in japlac, the depth of finish is good, and gives much thicker coverage than spray, which gives it toughness in service which is highly desirable AND it gives a lovely finish.
A friend painted his car with the proper coach paint and high quality brushes and did the prep by the book, and the finish was amazing, having looked at bobbly oem paint finishes on brand new cars for a living at one point (I was a vehicle inspector for vauxhalls), id put his paint job in a league far higher than them. Just on suface finish alone, let alone depth of paint etc.
I think it comes down to its a skill that you have to develop, if you dont research it and get all the right stuff and use it in the correct way, and get a bit of practice, it wont come out right. Exactly the same as welding really...
