Bucket repair advice

So,the local wood yard has asked me if i could sort out a repair on their bucket
Story is the H&S guy on his last visit has condemed so has to be sorted before next visit
All it gets used for is loading cut logs no dirt or digging done
Heres the bucket


Its 2.1M wide
I've high lighted the worse areas




It is in a bad state rust has got the better of it tbh its a bit thin right along the whole back of it not in anyway i dont think its just a patch over the said areas as getting to really clean for migging is not going to happen
So i thought of this idea

Not to scale of course,but i was thinking if i sort of reline the inside with sheets of 3mm mild steel gapped at about 3mm apart then add a sized sheet to the inside cheeks(is that what that part of the bucket are called?)
I was thinking of 7018 3.2 rods tack the sheets at the top and use the fork lift to bend them in to shape then fill the gaps etc
I reckon my tecarc 161i could manage it,only slight prob is i'm going to have to run off a 13amp supply
Doable?
Open to suggestion so feel free to offer them
Big problem i have is how to price it,i think parts and labour but god knows how long it'll take me

Clearly that needs fixing, but I’d also be making enquiries into what qualifications the H&S bloke has in assessing repairs on digger buckets

That i wouldn't have a scooby do about,all i see it as is work,from what the owner of the bucket said to me is its unsafe

There was a chap on here, can’t remember his name, was up near Manchester, haven’t seen him for a while now, he repaired all sorts of digger buckets

Its for holding cut logs.....I think I would cut holes all over it....tell the H&S man is for moisture removal

Should use Hardox as I recall for buckets ,it's a bit tougher than mild steel

7018 would be perfect. Depending on how much material you've got to work with you could just cut out the rusted areas and weld in some new plate in place. If you're not sure how long it will take go down the hourly route.

Not wanting to sound horrible, but the fact your asking these questions about rods, and how to tackle the repair maybe better to give it a miss. Anything goes wrong and someone gets hurt and all that.

I think the brackets that hold it on will be the only thing worth saving, it’s on its last legs, just cut some mild steel plates and patch them in, you’ll never make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, he should never have let it get to that stage!

Yeah sorry was thinking digging and shifting dirt but logs would be fine !

I don’t know your hourly rate but whether you cut the rot out or plate over it you’ll be there for a while, especially using stick.
Add in the cost of the metal and I think a replacement should be priced up, there might not be much saving by patching up a rotten thing.

I think relining it may not be so easy, unless there’s something thick enough to weld the new metal to.
Bending the metal to the required shape with the forklift will be harder than you expect as well, getting it to line up where you want it could be easier said than done.
I would think carefully before taking this on.

Given how thin it appears you might want 2.5 rods instead. Any decent brand of 7018 should do, avoid the cheap ones.

Relining like that looks ok but if the back is rotten what is the area around the mounting brackets like because that will be the main stress area when full of logs

Tino was a brilliant knowledge on making and repairing big buckets. There was also a fella called F.J who did a lot of bucket work. I just mess about compared to those boys.

If it were I , I would overplate a patch over the corrosion and let them know that it’s just a “on site repair “ and that it will get the H&s man smiling for the time being.

You can get a brand new light duty Telehandler bucket for about 900 quid. They are not worth messi g about with for that price

I repaired one of the cheap light duty buckets this week . Unfortunately it’s been used for heavy work!

@Arclikeharrypotter what i mean about rods is a good all round 7018 multi position etc
@Bill Edwards yer fully get where your coming from on that one,going down the cutting out and patch route seems favorable to me,if theres any steel there to stick to
@rory1 i've known the owner for a few years now,he'd rather repair than buy summit new it'll be like chopping his own arm off if you get me,lol

All i can do is give him the options you've suggested with a price see how it lies, i'm fully confident doing the work but will need to brush up on me stick skills BIG TIME
I'll put the safety concerns to him see where it goes from there,i'll keep you all updated what happens

Weld plenty of braces in top to bottom along the front edge before attempting any serious repairs. The front toe blade will distort if you put too much heat into it. You will struggle to bend the sheet steel so maybe worth cutting a cardboard profile and getting it rolled.

Also as previously mentioned, pay attention around the mounting brackets as future failure is most likely here. Reality is, it’s probably beyond economical repair.

cant it go away for a few days holidays when the hse inspectors due ?
