Building a grinder

Are you going to mount the motor behind the grinder ,away from grinder dust etc ?
I have been thinking of remounting my grinders ( two on a portable steel bench) and I saw a site where a guy has hung his grinders up on a wall. the motors are above the grinders,and the space below is clear, he uses them to polish guitar bodies and the free space prevents damage if the job gets caught , but it seemed like a great idea,especially where space is at a premium.

I had planned building a cabinet similar to the one in the photo, the motor below is protected inside, the motor cooling air via filtered vents, intake on left side away from grinding dust etc.


Thank you for the idea, got me thinking about the motor above, I'll have a word with the planning dept.

Thanks again for the idea RonB. I'm taking your advise from the other side of the world and going to bolt it to the wall. So, constructed (never seen like of before) wall mounting. 6mm mild s plate.



3.25 Clarke E6013s are reasonable rods, quite long peels of slag.

And welded it all together.



Adjustable rest.

Finished off for the night half way through making the wheel guard. Fried a steak with chips, egg, mushrooms and onions.

I bought the first ones from a motor factors Ltd who ordered them in for me about 20 - 30 years back, they were around £40 each then. I have bought a couple since off the bay, last one was £10 + £10 p+p, they appear on there now and then.

Yep, although we probably won't use the last 5 - 6" of the wheel, it needs to be there. 38mm seems common bore for a 12" wheel.

I typed in 'grinding wheel' in the bay search box and kept checking 'new posts' most nights for a few weeks, eventually one appeared.

thats no problem.u fit reducing bushes in them to suit your shaft size and held in place with the cup wahers either side

I was wondering about that BS, but would it be like to fly apart when worn down to the last inch or so?

I had assumed they were for a surface grinder and they'd be unsuitable for some reason.

Can HSS tooling be sharpened properly on a belt grinder or do you need a proper abrasive wheel?

When you're down to the last inch, the surface speed will be half as fast so probably fairly unusable.

providing the cup washers cover the side of the wheel a couple of inches it wont be going anywhere and over a 12 inch wheel u would bin it if it wore down to about 10 inch

i sharpen all my hss lathe tools on a disk sander and a belt sander using the angle gauge .much better than freehand on a grinder then finish off with an oilstone

I use any tool that will sharpen hss, occasionally dipping in water to keep the tool cool, you wouldn't want water to get on your belt is only prob I can think of.

I seem to remember from my Abrasive Wheels Course, circa 1993, that all wheels, over a certain size, are supposed to be marked with their maximum RPM and also their minimum size to stop them flying apart.

I've got an old book that describes how to scrounge big old grinder wheels, brake them into smaller bits and drill them to mount on your small machine at home..... I don't think I will try it

I've heard heard of people doing that with a waterjet cutter. I think that's the safest way.

Just a little bit of advice for anyone building a grinder. Do not weld tabs on wheel guard to screw outer guard plate to like some idiot did in the picture. You can't put the grinding wheel on the machine if you do this. Coulda kicked myself.

Cut some notches out of the wheel to clear the tabs?

Or buy a hexagon wheel.

Done. Other way was just a bit of insanity that crept in.
