Building an adjustable welding table for seated and standing TIG

Hi folks

I'm going to building an adjustable height small welding table for my new tig when I get to order it just after Christmas. So I will be building it with my mig and using it with that until I get the tig. I want to be able to use it seated and standing without killing my back.

Right a bit about my plan, I have a 6mm plate cnc laser cut plate with table clamp notches cut into it (pic to follow) which is 1000x580mm, it weighs 23.9kg. The top frame will be 1 inch angle which the plate will sit on so maybe another few kilos with other bits.

So I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on the rams and whether to go hydraulic or air rams/actuators? I can't decide, I want it to be a tidy setup so any help appreciated. 1000 heads is better than one as they say.

Why so complicated?, just have a stool/chair of a suitable height

I paid £100 secondhand but in mint / virtually unused condition.

Ah it's not that complicated, I like a challenge and building things out of the ordinary. I have my stool already I built it a while ago and it's about perfect for the foot pedal. And I'm quite tall so it would be nice to have a good tall table when needed.

Yeah my mate has one for his bike, I thought about it but I want to be able to slide underneath with my chair while welding small things, but the jack setup is sumin to think about.

I will put a pic up later, it's not quite finished yet, the spinny base needs putting in me electrolysis bath and painting and I'm gonna put some thin sheet over the actors I welded on to look a bit better but I use it to much atm to do it.

Now I have a real incentive to get this done. I will keep posting up my progress bud, I'm currently looking for a 12v hydraulic pump as I have a load of rams kicking around but if I can't find one I have another little idea going round my head

A little update here after new year I have all the steel to start the build and I have a guy trying to source me some hydraulic lifts in 2 types an electric one and hand crank one, I will be going for a hand crank as it will be a less prone to melting but I've asked about an electric one aswell in case that's what you'd like. I can easily source a monarch dyna lift from the states but at great expense though. But I'm hopeful to get a manual lift either used refurbished for around £150 or new for £220. I've tried to go as streamline as possible to allow as much movement under the table as possible without hydraulics interfering with my chair or yours depending on your table build. My welding table is a converted hospital bed rescued from the local hospital, I had a choice of either foot or electric operated beds so I plumped for the foot operated bed and all the electric rams off the other beds. They just put them out for the scrapman.
I cut the top down a bit and put a piece of 4mm sheet on the top.
I also have a smaller adjustable TIG table made from an ex hospital over bed table, a spring lifts the table and to lower it you press a lever and press down, a bit like an office chair. These are ideal if you are wheelchair bound as the base is a U shape meaning you can wheel your chair underneath.
They had about 30 of these tables in a skip!

After reading this I had a scout around looking for these but in Orkney they never throw the beds out so I found a nice guy on eBay who sorted me out 4 long actuators and control box with remote, he seems like a nice fella. They should be arriving this week and I will get started with the build and post pictures of the bits that go right and the bad bits

It's something I've wanted for a while, the plate I've got isn't huge but it's a good size for a small tig table and if this goes well I will buy another and double the table size 2 tables that bolt together

Very easy a mate has one, it doesn't collapse down a lot so you need a high ramp. Other than that it fine

Max safe load on the beds I have seen is 250kg but they will take a lot more!

This does look like a worthy project for those fiddly jobs.
