building first welding trolley any advice

I'm going to be building my first welding trolley over the next few days so I'm looking for any advice i can get, my welder is an old oxford 180 amp stick welder and the trolley I will be making will also have a shelf to store rods as hooks to store the leads, the material I will be using is some 3mm angle iron that's 45mm wide and some flat stock that is also 3mm thick 45mm wide any advice at all would be a big help thanks

How experienced a welder are you? I ask because I'm not(!) and one of the things that caught me out when I made my trolley was heat distortion - a lovely flat rectangle ended up being twisted and I had to "persuade" them to become flat again.

Plenty clamping while welding up, re-check for true each time, and weld from all sides to drag it back in.

Here's a simple trolley I made for my Pickhill 180a welder using 25mm box section and 40mm angle.

I added 2 horns to one of the handles of the welder to hold the power cable.

No shelf for electrodes but I keep mine in the hotpress in the house and only bring them out when I need them. If I had a shelf for them I would only leave them outside to get damp.

fairly experienced been welding for a couple of years now, just never built a trolley. that sounds like a plan I will keep that in mind and don't worry about it thanks

I like your design and the shelf is only for holding sticks when I'm working not a permanent storage solution

One good blob of spatter and they can blow and injure you or worse

some side supports have been added along with the start of the handles but unfortunately the handles did end up a tad on the wonkey side but nothing that can't be straitened out the next things on my list are lead hooks, rod holders the and then the wheels finally after that a good paint

I am going to build a trolley for my mig & tig welders and had planned to use pneumatic sack barrow wheels on the rear where the gas bottles sit to make it easier moved. Might have to rethink that now, I could always cover them up like the rear wheels on a Citroen DS.

Have you built an extension to your Workshop, as I don't remember there being much room, unless old timers is setting in????...

Oh and the handle and the cross brace should be one piece.......

Just over a week ago, I had a brand new gas bottle trolley with pneumatic tyres, pumped up to the correct pressure.

After about an hour of sitting in the sun while I was removing a seized king pin there was a bang looked around, I couldn't see anything wrong noise must have come from the road outside the yard.

I carried on working it wasn't until I tried to move the gas bottles that I found out one of the tyres had become so hot that it popped off the rim and burst the inner tube. Had to by a new wheel as I could get an inner tube.......

Solid is definitely the way to go...

The issue is we forget such things. No way on gods planet might I build a welding cart with pneumatic tyres.
Sometimes they create serious in injury

Besides one cannot get a flat when you run your cart over a still hot stub end etc
Which even if nobody is hurt it's a big inconvenience
