Butane v propane....

If you need to use high volumes of gas in a cold environment you need propane, but for using small quantities of gas in a warm environment, butane will be fine.

Thanks for the notes. Maybe one small thing to add in a footnote is that the volume (draw off rate) is as important as the temperature. Hence, another way to square the circle is to manifold a number of bottles together.

I have never considered it before, but your remarks on pressure make me wonder if blue and red Calor bottles have the same constructional details, material thickness and pressure test regime as each other.

I know that's a big problem for home metalcasters, some also have to heat the bottles for enough flow rate and endurance to complete a melt - warm water bath with an immersion heater would probably do it, as long as you could set the thermostat *low* enough!

I have a couple of big propane bottles for use at home, but forked out £20 or so for an adaptor for LPG pumps at the Motorway Services (the dappies in the booth don't pay enough attention to tell you not to), the first 2am fillup saved the cost of the adaptor... There's a formula for converting kg to litres, to ensure you leave enough expansion room.

More drift: My first house had a really ancient (probably1920s era) gas cooker in it when I bought it; the deal at the time of changeover was that if the gas people couldn't convert a particular appliance, they would replace it, I was really disappointed when the bloke who came round to do the survey took one look at this museum piece and said, 'oh yeah, we'll be able to convert that no problem'

There's a formula for converting kg to litres, to ensure you leave enough expansion room.

The propane tanks over here (never seen butane BTW) have a small vent valve that is opened when filling.
It's set with a dip tube at the 80% (or whatever value) fill level.
Procedure is to fill until liquid comes out that vent, then close it and the fill valve.
Allot of places just use the scale, some do both.

You get almost zero soot from butane unlike propane which if not roaring with air makes a lot of soot.

Apparently he'd been up in the loft over the weekend and he has a propane regulator on the stove. Given that his bottle is orange....much happiness!

I just expect butane bottles to be blue - but not all of them are! Shell and Unigas butane bottles are also orange! Google it...
