Tbh you have more got to wonder what engineer specified a mole knowing a 6 inch water main is on site
The engineer should know where everything is before drawing up the method statement

We have grundomats up to six inch and have never hit another service, if in doubt go deep and make sure you are under anything possible by a long chalk. Biggest problem with them is the guys using them, service layers get very sloppy

they were given a plan by the waterboard near enough of where the pipe was and they were told to dig 3 exploratory holes to confirm before they started but didn't

I recently did a 2 day cat and genny course. Tbh I still couldn't explain how to use it properly lol. It's quite a powerful tool if you know how to use it.

Essentially you want to hand dig trial holes to prove there's nothing there, then bring in the machinery once confirmed.
