Might have known my Grandad, he was there in the '40s, in the test houses mostly.

May well have, Dad was involved with the testing I think, too late to ask now ..... unless we have a seance. He worked there from 1939 until 1951, from what I’ve made out, he worked for Wellworthy’s in Lymington, but was transferred or moved to Napier’s as part of the war effort.

No just an exterior 3 pin 240 socket,then the usual 3 Kva transformer ,if it helps,I can take the 10 kva out of the workshop,but I’d still be drawing off that piddly 3 pin .

yes but the closer you have the tranny to your welder there will be hardly any voltage drop less drop on a 240volt supply than a 110 increase the cable core size and you will overcome the loss which turns energy in to heat on the cable

You might well be running at the limit of the 3kva transformer - I think I'd be using the larger one.
But you're talking of trudging quite some distance,and they're heavy - so I'd quite understand if that's the reason!

PS - I've just looked - and mine (IFL, but a different one, and 240v, too) says it wants 5.5kva.

Thanks,I’ll fit a 3 pin plug on the cable of the 10kva transformer,and try.

The cable run was 62m,and I have long leads on the welder output side,used 3.2 rods on V.up then 2.5 on horizontal beads,although on one occasion was able to use 3.2 at all positions.So was well pleased,in 36 years of site welding,most of that time having had my own generator,I’ve never imagined such a long cable run could achieve such power.

Btw the tip with slow blow fuses worked,as in the first hour,I blew 2 simultaneously,so swapped to slow,and never blew another.
