Calor 47kg Gas Bottle Valve

Hi,

Picked up a old empty 47kg propane bottle today, filled it with water through the valve to get all remaining gas out, but for the life of me I cant get the valve undone!!

Im thinking of cutting the top guard off the tank as I dont need it, and make a lever to undo it..

Has anyone else found an easier way of doing this?

Will be using it as a auxiliary air receiver, if I can get the valve out!! The valve is now buckled through my lightly tapping

I left the valve in on mine and butchered an old regulator to connect to my hose.

You are turning it the right way? It's a normal RH thread into the bottle, LH for the regulator connection.

Put a bit of bar through the guard/handle to stop the cylinder turning. Then a big pair of stilsons, facing the same way as the bar resting on the floor.

Or course, you have full ownership of the cylinder, or permission to fiddle with it??

Prob should of left the valve as it was, but kind of bent now!!

So just to clarify, i need to be turning it Anti Clockwise to undo it, as with any other standard bolt etc??

Once i drain the water out of it tomorrow night, will get a big wrench on it..

an even easier way ,cut the ring of the top and give the bronze valve a good couple of bats on the side with a hammer ,they unscrew easily

Already tried that with a 1" x 1" solid steel bar with a lump hammer tapping it

Going to cut the ring off tomorrow for round 2!!

Have done a couple of these, I use a large adjustable pipe wrench, 24" handle large, with the jaws set across the largest dimension of the valve, that is from the gas outlet to the back, then just turn it anti-clock. They are VERY tight but this does it.

Tapping is not enough it wants a good whaling to start it on it's way. I lay them on their side and sit on them and use a steel drift and lump hammer and have not met one that will not come out yet.

Got a recip saw? If so get a bi-metal blade for it(bosch do one),cut the guard off,use some form of lube,unless you want it on(prob not),then cut the valve off,its brass your'll zip through it,next use a stepping drill and slowly drill the rest out till the valve stem is quite thin,few taps with a cold chisel and it'll break out,leaving the valve thread intact.
Have done this method loads of times and still standing.
One question,how did you manage to fill it with water with the valve on,not easy i know?

One question,how did you manage to fill it with water with the valve on,not easy i know?

It's just a tap, not a check valve, so I just connected mine up to the hose, once the pressures equalised and the flow stopped I removed the hose, the compressed gas came out and I repeated the cycle until it was full of water.

Snap, kept getting blasts of propane every time I removed the hose... Took a while but did the job....

Will I have to get a tapered reducing bush into the top now?

Ive measured it and looks to be 3/4" BSPT thread..

And last but not least, will it always smell of propane? just filled it full of water again but the smell is still really strong so much so the neighbours are moaning :-)

the stench will be there for a long time

shot some hot soapy water in and it will soon disapear , lol a couple of swift bats with a hammer removes them eaily

a bit late now to use a bull nose its battered isnt it . a reducing bush would be best as u can get all the fittings for it easily
