Can I upgrade This Compressor?

I've only just found this thread.
You have a two stage compressor there. You will find that there are 4 vavles on this unit. It would be worth stripping theses down and cleaning them you may find there is a build up of carbon on them preventing them from closing fully.
If you decide to remove the cylinder take care. The piston is double acting. The top part is a larger bore than the bottom half.You will need to go into the crankcase and disconnect the conrod to remove the cylinder.

You should see the amount of pipework on thursdays last job. 15hp 6000psi 4 stage.

Thanks chaps, haven't had a min to spare to look at this yet, Looking forward to stripping it down even more now, sounds quite interesting. Would the fact that it is a two stage compressor make it any quicker at pumping a bigger volume of air into the collector?

You must post pics as you go, I'm intrigued by this double acting dual bore piston.

A two stage compressor pushes the air from one cylinder to another, the second being the smaller diameter. This achieves a higher pressure rather than greater flow. A simple twin cylinder single stage compressor will produce greater flow and run more smoothly than a single cylinder machine.

This is the same model as that little rebadged Laycock one of mine, isn't it? Just on a slight point regarding anyone disassembling one of these, that copper tube which goes from the crank to the cylinder head can easily catch one unawares. There's a little spring and ball bearing nestled in the top part of that assembly, at the head end. Guess who found out the hard way?

Since I replied to your thread earlier in the year I've bought another 2 Bristols ! One is pump only the other is a portable with a petrol engine, both the same, V Twin pump though, each cylinder about the same size as the single on yours.
I'll replace the engine with an electric motor on the portable. Need to find a source of parts for Bristols though as I want to strip and inspect all mine.

Planning on giving this one a going over too. Unless there's owt pump specific actually faulty or worn though, parts shouldn't be a concern?
