Can someone tell me what the Acetylene bottle pressure should be when it is full?

Do they weigh all the cylinders when they refill them and top up the acetone first?

That is the proper procedure - add acetone to the empty (of gas) cylinder until it reaches the "tare weight".

The proper way to determine the amount of acetylene in the cylinder is to subtract that weight from the current weight of the cylinder.

I realise it was posted earlier. I repeated it because topping up the acetone makes it accurate. I should have noted "as stated" - sorry about that.

At the ms company I worked at everyone used the oa bottles laid down in the back of the truck, there were always the stories of why you shouldn’t but that would be ignored. Can’t think of a single occasion it caused a problem and most of what we did was bombed.

If you use an acetylene cylinder on its side, the acetone is drawn out. There has to be more to that story.

Dont think there is much more to it than that, bottles were thrown into the vans with the gauges pointing to the rear of the vehicle, hoses coiled up on top and off they went. None of them would unload the bottles and stand them up before they used them. Perhaps its because they are only part filled and that in reality the acetone is unlikely to come out with the gas.

The cylinders are filled to the top with acetone. If they were not, the acetylene would be very unstable.

Sounds like the kind of outfit where they flick sweat off dynamite for fun.

Reminds of some contractors turning up at Ford tractor plant in Basildon with the bottles lying in the back of a pickup, they weren't best pleased when the site engineer told them to stand the bottles up for 24 hours before they could start work.

I was on it today, and as you say it is a Dorman diesel engine.
Stripped the part down with the oxy torch the bloke said was knackered, only to find out there was nowt wrong with it!
