yups thats the line of thinking l had, l really cant see me want to drive it round the streets but l will proablly keep it mot'ed as it will keep the resale value up should l ever want to sell it

Similar to fiddle brakes on a trials motor then? but at much higher speed :laughing:

I know what you mean about solid back axles when I had a go on a Honda ATC 3-wheeler, had to forget the principles of leaning into a corner and lean out instead to unload the inner wheel!

yes fiddle brakes in effect, what l really need is an electronically adjustable diff that tightens up for the striaghts and relaxes as l turn the steering wheel. but l would imagine that it would cost more than the £44 l paid for the rover BRM gearbox that comes with LSD as standard so thats whats going in there :laughing:

and yes them 3 wheelers are lethal but fun arnt they, as you say you need to lean out and get the inside wheel to lift, once its off the ground that becomes your diff and round you go, l keep looking at them on ebay but l thought they were dangerous when l was young and fit, now it would be suicidal, "with age comes a cage" :laughing:

We used to take one on holiday with us as a "toy" to play with on the fields or beach...

One of my mates on the pebble bank at Barmouth, those wild, irresponsible days of youth with no helmet :laughing:

It's only a torsen diff anyway isn't it in the BRM?
So it should turn just fine anyway, they're pretty easy to overpower off-road, certainly will be with the fiddle brakes!

you are right brm's are fitted with a torsen diff which means my box dident come out of a brm then as it looks like this when you look into the driveshaft port

which means its a type A diff, so perhaps my gearbox came out of a 220 turbo or some thing along those lines, my mgf driveshafts fit though so thats good news, bad news is that its a cable operated clutch, will have to see if that will swop over to hyd

anyone know about Lsd's ??

l have this gearbox out of a rover 220 or simalar and if l put a driveshaft in each side and then hold one still l can turn the gearbox input shaft by hand which turns the other drive shaft whilst l keep the first one still, its hard work and l can only just turn the input whilst holding the one still, does this sound right ?? l expected more grip and it to be really hard to turn the input or even impossible but l have no expirance of lsd's, l dont want to clean this box up and fit it if its furbered before l start

With an LSD when you turn the input shaft both drive shafts should turn, But if one of the shaft were to be put under pressure and stopped from turning the other shaft should still be able to turn. I hope that was right with me and helped :L

yes its the amount of pressure required to stop one shaft that has surprised me, seems to easy to stop one to me, but l dont really know

Do you have a pic looking through the gearbox into the diff?

In most open diffs you will see the diff pin but with most LSD boxes you will be able to see right through.

with a torsen lsd you would be able to see right through but from this thread it would appear to be a type A lsd

well l thought l was just going to swap the gearbox on my mgf engine for the one with the lsd in it, but alas not quite so easy as the lsd gearbox came off a rover turbo which is a t series engine and has a different bellhousing bolt patten, shame l dident relise this before l cleaned the wrong gearbox up :laughing:

now l have to swap the diffs over

the frame is now painted back into red :cool:

so now l can start the nice bit, srewing all the shiney bits on :laughing:

coming on really nicely mate, shame on the gearbox but atleast youv had the practise on the first one to get the second box REALLY shiny lol

When youv got this one finished id love to come up and take a look at this and the other buggys when your out in the mud

lol l think l must have been a cleaner in a previous life, l seem to do enough of it but oddly enough l dont mind doing it soon have no2 box gleaming

no probs come and have a go when its finished, l have been offering some of the shiney bits up but the bushes have come yellow

no way will l be having yellow bushes on a red buggy no way

need to change them to black me thinks
and l opened up the t series gearbox, l dont "do" gearboxes so this might end in tears :laughing:
