this is what you are dealing with


if your dealing with the top cap dont drill downwards on hammer use a grinder

you can drill sideways at an angle but you do not drill downwards you will crack it and if enough cracks it will fail and colapse

if you intend to upgrade where it stands and you can do then you can use a grinder to cut into the sides of it though is a mucky job a drill will crack and spread the bits all over the place in lumps this is the thing you dont want as you will then have to reline it

a grinder only spreads dust not chunks



so whilst your doing the cap fit a mushroom vent on it at the same time as renewing the cap

as goes for the cap one can be made easily with other info for building out of bricks

and yes concrete can be used as well

Tbh I struggle with most of your posts due to the spelling, grammar and lack of punctuation.

for my spelling im still on top of that to say i dont use a program to sort it out even though i hardly use writing anymore

as goes for the lacking of punctuation thats the one thing i was never taught at school and to be honest at my age i really couldnt care less

to say i was only 3 points away from an o level the board wouldnt give me an o level and thats without the punctuations at exams and it was appealed so went through the board twice

as goes for deris use a large umbrella to catch odd pieces but it wont catch the big stuff you will need to make a home made umbrella that opens up when you slide it down and closes when you pull it up of coarse you can use stop slides to hold it in place

a 3 point frame will hold the umbrella while you work on the drain itself

I reckon I have a leeching cesspool then, first picture. I can now search for any hidden air inlets and vents now I know what I'm looking for. Did see a weird "American mailbox" looking lead / zinc cowl thing in the undergrowth one time.

Folklore round here has it that back in the day they were built and inspected then a few bricks/stones would be removed from the bottom.

if you're just worried about the broken concrete around the manhole etc.

I'd add i single line of bricks around the mahole support a new cover higher up

dig the coil away about 2ft back around the hole.... line of bricks around that up and level with the center bicks you just put in and then fill it with concrete

if it ends up being a lot of concrete (depends how steep the dome is?) you don't need it as high at the sides

toss some rebar mesh in for good measure

you need an umbrella shape to support the structure while you cut away the cap

easiest way to do that is to make a round circle so it slides onto a scaffold pole and make it smaller then the width of the manhole cover

now rough idea so you get the jest of it round circle with bars that stick up when its lowered into the hole it then opens out to form a circle this then caps the hole so you can work on it
when finished you lower the circle, pull on a rope or wire that closes the folds into the circle and lift back out clean off reinsert or just renew the whole cap before you pull out again
remember its only there to stop fall ins while you cut up the cap up to renew the cap again

Chap that built the passiv place I posted up about, he filled in his and put a clay cap over the top. a couple of feet thick if I recall.

My self-built 9 inch brick slurry tank ( below ground 9x9x14 deep with step irons in the wall) got four 3mtr sheets of 19 mm construction ply across it screwed to each other walled in wooden edges 150 mm deep m wired sheets of 5 mm reinforcing mesh set on cut brick, a wooden frame to sit the lid cover on then 19 barrow loads of measured 6 to 1 mixed ballast concrete on it , four weeks later I cut the access hole in the for the lid with my sabre saw and then poured in god only knows how many barrows of the came concrete mix in a trench I'd dug around the perimeter . Due to disabilities and the location of the slurry tank it was all done by hand from a ballast heap about 20 feet away and walked in on a double wheeled muck barrow over builders scaffold boards screwed down on cross members . Setting it up took time and effort but was well worth it by the time I was pouring in the concrete .

WRT wife plants from mum, I understand the emotional attachment I had 11 to move from east Anglia to here in Wales.
Water the plant well , dig a trench around it ,keep watering it whilst you dig a new hole for it , drop half a bag of well composted farmyard manure in the bottom of the hole fork it in well , move the plant over and back fill with decent friable soil whilst still wetting it.

This time of the year you'll still have a month before the shrub /tree closes down for winter , Come spring it will be growing well in the new location. You could also take several cuttings , treat them with hormone root compound and grow them on in pots this time of the year or directly into a friable bed area such as where your beans were grown .
