Charcoal starter

Bought one from Morrisons a couple of years ago, still use bits of kindling under the coals to get it going as I keep forgetting about the chimney

good thing about them is well not that i have ever used one but u can get a new set of coals ready for when the current ones are getting beyond cooking temps

Obviously I'm not the only person to have not used one of these, what is the problem they solve ? As I've never had a problem getting a barbecue lit and burning great

It just makes the job of lighting the charcoal easier wookie, that's all. I've always found in the past that you have to light the firelighters and then faff on stacking and re-stacking the charcoal over them to get it all lit, whereas with the chimney starter it's stuff in newspaper, fill, light, crack a beverage whilst it gets going (or two if it's briquettes as they take longer) and then pour out,, stick the cooking grate on and off you go. Makes BBQ-ing a breeze

@Browser and @123hotchef thanks for that, do you just let the coals burn away to nothing after you've finished cooking or dowse them in water and save for next time ?

i let them go mate because the break up after that and become pieces and fall through the grate, or use them to start the chimnea up ;-)

I am going to make a big starter to try out of a metal 20L oil drum for the big 250L oil drum bbq wonder if it will work

Interesting as I always pour water on them and then save for next time, part burnt ones always light a lot easier than new ones in my experience.
