cheap ebay blasting pot - worth it?

Ive been thinking about making a blasting pot, but had a look on ebay -

£64 delivered...

Im sure id pay more than half that for fittings on a diy job, so it would be simpler just to buy off-the-shelf.

...but not if theyre no good?

Im sorry - ive just been reading other threads, and realise this is a common unit (i did search the part number before posting, but, well, Chinese tools....)

and ball valve grit metering valves are crap unless--your prepaired to buy a decent one -or make your -own otherwise there hit and miss

They work fine if you're prepared to spend some time learning how to use it, as said, junk the nozzle and if you want a better metering valve buy one, but for the money the ball valve is OK.

I'm planning on getting one of these as an upgrade to my suction feed cabinet.

The photo of the one you linked to is watermarked KMS Direct, on KMS's website it is almost £10 cheaper

no there 2 large and just a choke valve u want a sand valve . centurywise sell them for about 68 quid there half inch bsp threads on them and screw on -similar to the ones I made . heres the type-that are best century will be cheaper though this is an example

My blast pot is one of those cheapo 20 gallon Chinese things, looking at the pics of those new valves will I have the clearance to fit one of those under my blast pot as they look a bit bigger than my current one in the photos of them? I've been underneath looking but I'm actually unsure which size of sand valve I'll need.

heres my smaller one its 3/8 bsp the other ones half inch it sticks down 4 inch to the bottom off the tee piece. the bought ones will be half inch bsp u could either cut the bush out of a bought pot and weld a half inch one in or use a reducing bush to fit one .the larger one I made has quick release fittings but-- isn't realy needed if u want cheaper and simple there far better than a ball valve more consistent flow and less blockages . if your using a 3mm carbide jet and preferably 2 x 14cfm compressors it will run all day without problems and be a nice set up depending on how much u have to spend

What kind of a reducing bush would I need a male to male 1/2" to a 3/8th BSP?

I've actually been eyeing up this one but have come to the conclusion that if I just change the fittings nozzle and a few other little bits and bobs there won't actually be that much between then, what do you think?

-up to u. to upgrade a cheap pot to something decent 200 quid all in and a small amount of work- . pity u wernt local u could have borrowed mine to try

I'm just going to upgrade the one I've got and spend the difference on a better Powder Coating gun or bigger compressor, So that gets me back to the reducing bush again is it a male to male 1/2" to a 3/8th BSP that I actually need to make this work?

I think the centurywise ones are half inch bsp if u want to reduce it u can get brass reducing bushes from machine mart down to 3/8 bsp

if I was u id just change the blast nozzle on the cheap pot to a carbide one and try it out then if your reasonably happy with it change the metering valve . use -- -one 14cfm comp and if its just to say usable buy another and work your way up -- 2 comps and an uprated - pot wont be more than 400 quid
