Cheap vs Really Cheap tools

I'm not a heavy-duty or high-volume 'driller of holes' but somehow I've ended up with virtually no drills smaller than 6mm in metric I realise they're Chinese made but it says HSS so should probably serve my purpose(s) - I'm setting no store by the "Cobalt coated" bit.......

They look like a set I've had for a few years from work (Bought from local tool supplier), not had heavy use but it's done me fine and the bits are actually pretty sharp.

On the plus side you could always get something to go with them, looks like they sell a bit of allsorts there... ahem!!

HSS on chinese stuff is simply a translation error, it should say Made in China Shh...

Cobalt coated,LOL...Nah more like gold paint Avoid these type drills like the clap in a salt mine.

Damn, never spotted that! did pull the button on the drills though - we'll see. Like you, I've been using similar, which might explain the broken ones......

I've used the ones I have for drilling in electrical panels mainly, installing din rail and the like.

To be fair they've lasted ok, and actually surprised me how long they've kept an edge to be honest. For stuff like that it didn't warrant spending a fortune on a top notch set (working on different sites all the time tools have a habit of walking anyway) , wasn't expecting much so I've been pleasantly surprised.

As you say if I was doing a lot of drilling work then I'd probably be looking at dormer or presto or similar set (I have loads of loose drill bits of decent makes in a drawer at home so these just get used when I'm out and about).

I shy away from cheap mostly. Years ago my wife came home from the market with a £8 set of metric combination spanners. I grudgingly accepted them wondering how long it would be before they stretched and rounded a bolt. Well that was probably 8 or 10 years ago and i still have them in perfect condition. Even the chrome has held up.

Then again last week I found these for sale in Maplins. £6.99 and seem to be well made. I will keep them in my motorbike toolkit.

its suprising how good the steel is on some cheap spanners. I had a set given and ive taken u bolts of leaf springs with them and hit them with hammers to see if I can wreck them loosening nuts and they have taken it

Some things ain't worthwhile buying as premium brands

Why pay more for something that don't matter much save the cash for something that does imo
