Cheapo Bead Roller Upgrade

Just by eye, runs reasonably true. Will see what it's like when it runs it's first bead though.

Depending on whether the mrs wants to do anything tonight or not, I may be ready for a test run tonight or tomorrow if not at the workshop tonight.

Going to be a bit of a ****** if it's not cos when you return it as "faulty" think they might wonder why it's put on sooooo much weight!

Well I lured my wife to the workshop tonight with the offer of pizza and a lovely warm woodstove and while she was there she took a few pics of when I was working away, something a little different (the pics not me working ;-) ).

I rolled my first bead tonight, nothing too exciting but everything worked as it should. I see how a motorised one is the way to go for rolling beads, but at this stage not what I need it for so later down the road I'll look into doing that. I still need to make the handle for the front adjuster and weld on some bar to keep the dies in place. I ordered the parts needed to copy Bill's spring adjuster idea and will do that next week. Oh yeah I also still need to turn up some Jenny dies on my lathe.

Looks really good. You should have tried running a bead beforehand just to see how much stiffer you have made it, that would have put a bigger smile on your face! Have you thought about adding some fore and aft movement on one shaft to adjust the die centres?

Thanks, quite happy how it turned out and a coat of paint should make it look not too bad.

I didn't think of it at the time, just wanted to get stuck in.

There's a few ways to move the dies if needed and might look at options later. I currently have a bit of adjustment just by loosening a collar and a gear on one shaft and sliding it forward or backward, hence the cut out in the front for access to the collars. I also have a lathe so can make specials dies or attachments as I need them. But I'll mainly use it as a Jenny roller I would say.

Thanks. Bead is what I did, just pushing that pattern into the sheet, Jenny is when you have dies one with a sharp edge for turning the edge over to make a flanged edge or a wired edge in a panel. If making curved car panels you'd use the Jenny dies to start turning over the edge and then finish it off with a hammer and dolly.

A mate came over as he wanted to use my lathe for a small job so showed him how to use it, then my wife wanted to learn so gave my wife a go on my lathe and turned down some bar with a couple of steps and faced it off, she loved it. Anyhow I then got onto the bead roller, have done the spring return and the handle for winding the top shaft down. I added another nut on the top for a bit of extra endurance.

A good tip if you are using the roller as a joggler on aluminium is to gently radius the edges on the dies otherwise it can shear the sheet.

Cheers will do. They are a bit sharp so was planning to whip them in the lathe. Also need to make a set of Jenny does, not sure what I'll make them from yet and how hard they need to be, any suggestions?

Have you seen the dies that Lazze uses on YouTube. A set of 3 dies for Jennying that allow an acute angle to be rolled.

Thanks, not seen that, that's excellent. It's an extension of how I've done it, normally just Jenny dies, hammer and dolly and crimping pliers to turn the edge right in. Will look at copying Lazze's idea.

Bought a set of tipping dies for the bead roller from Hoosier Profiles in the US and look like good quality as ever. Will crack on with a repair to a rear tailgate for my Volvo Amazon next weekend, can't wait to try the dies out. Also got plenty of other jobs coming up that I will use the dies for as well as I will mainly use the bead roller as a swager.

ive made up a couple of dies today, a pair that joggle and one for quilting needs a skateboard wheel to finish that off. bit cheeky but can i have the dimensions for the tipping dies??? i can shamelessly copy yours.... shhhh dont tell anyone.....
