Chinese 9 x 20 lathe rebuild - the adventure begins

Well, actually, no it doesn’t. But one has to start this rebuild somewhere.

I’m just at the “where is it going” stage, and I’ve got a nice big workbench to build it on, but need a way of moving the lathe about on it during and after the build.

I have an old aluminium step platform, the top of which will be the permanent ‘dolly’ under the chip tray. Having found these castors (see picture), I think they will be perfect fitted under the dolly, and give me access all round the lathe, and even shove it to the back of the table if neccessary. I also like the idea of being able to level the lathe if my wooden workbench top gets a bit tired.

Question is, will one in each corner do, or would it be better to fit 6. Possibly one in each corner and two fitted just about 1/3 of the way from the lathe head.

Or am I overthinking this.

You may want to edit/blur/crop the personal info at the top of your pic?

Why have we not seen pictures of said lathe. The chip tray may not be man enough to prevent twisting if your going to have it on wheels.

Brain the size of a lentil, and shrinking. Thanks for pointing that out, now fixed.

The chip tray will be bolted on top of the platform top, so will be supported across its whole length. The castors will be bolted under the platform top.

Can they be locked as in braked when not in use. Last thing you want is rotating metal wandering around your shed.

I think they are designed to mainly act as feet, with the wheels wound up until needed.

And they look quite cute too.

Bit of a crap listing for the feet. No mention of weight limits etc. dimensions chart referred too are missing too.

Go for a bigger size for easier rolling. Can't imagine your lathes particularly heavy. One each corner.

Apparently the feet will do 50kilos (or was it 40k, must remember to check) each, the lathe officially weighs 250lb. The next feet up are 70kilos per castor.

When I was a kid I really lusted after one of those, back then they were £800 new
There’s a bit of me that still wants one in a breakdown truck.

another alternative buy a set of wheeled drawers and fit it to the top of it

Ta very muchly for those. Whets my appetite a bit.
I've been kicking around the idea of a Mini-Lathe, but not too keen on the tiddler. I was aware there is a size up from that, which this covers nicely.

After selling my soul to the devil, and signing in using blood, I got it downloaded. I think I may have to do a bit fettling to dropbox, as it keep giving trouble if left unused for a while.
