My compressor looks a little different to the one in the manual. Mine is more like the one below. Could someone please tell me where the non-return valve is?

Looks like the part on the left of the tank with the pipe from pump and pressure switch going to it.

It starts up (it has a soft start) and after few seconds as it gets faster then it trips out the switch.

A compressor with a soft start? !! that is the last thing you need,-------- thick old oil, thick old oil. thick old oil------oil day long ...

no the pressure switch does that the NRV, just stops the tank emptying through it.

I'll change the oil anyway as it's probably overdue.

Any idea of how much they hold and can i reduce the viscosity as it recommends 30w?

in the cold weather I use 15---20 ish you can use engine oil in straight 20, morris oils do some, none detergent. TBH seems to work ok in the summer, too in uk. dont forget those grades on the machine are to cover spain /greece etc etc. ambient could be 40 ? at that temp 30 would be like 15------ before you hit the button!.

I really cant see it being oil...the oil is not pumped but flicked by a thin finger hanging down from the bottom of the conrod,the drag off this must be hardly meaurable

not wish to argue but the stiction IS measurable!--- it is what is left in the bearings on the bores etc etc even the grease in the motor bearing plays apart. as well as water caught in the oil that freezes.

Shoulds be ok I buy 5ltrs and change it each November ish cheaper that way
If you check your car data the oil grade changes as the extremes temps change, compressors are just little engines with the exception that they produce water as well as air but dont have the extreme temp of fuel to burn the water off to the same extent

I have also use 5w 40 too fully synth but 'THEY' recon the detergent oil should not be used coz it varnishes ( no I dont mean disappear !!) things up, but on the flip side the compressors on the diesel water pumps I work on their oil is pressure fed from the engine and are pumping 24/7 they NEVER stop, and are fine it is like you running your compressor with a permanent--- massive air leak.

I'll change the oil anyway as it's overdue and take the belt off check the motor & Pump are free. If so ill check the Non return valve and change the Capacitors last

Hi guys,

Just thought id resurrect this post as i'm still having problems with the compressor. (long time i know but i've moved house and its taken so frikken long to get to a point that i can fettle with the compressor again)

Right.. Checked capacitors and found a wire off the start cap.. Seemed to help loads but now seems to still be cutting out around 60psi - so will start no bother then cut out the little red pop out button at around 60psi every time.

disconnected the belt and everything runs freely - started without belt and ran for a while with no problems (but obviously under no load)

All i can really think now is that maybe the run cap is knackered.

Any other ideas much appreciated?

Yes, belt slipping would probably not matter.
....

Actually it does matter in my experience.

I moved my compressor and somehow the belt slackened and it stalled. Tightening the belt cured it.
