Cobbled together an air extraction system for the garage

Cos I need to mostly shut the garage door to weld (to stop random passers-by getting arc-eyed), I knew I had to do something to get rid of the fumes. So I'd been watching gumtree for inline extractors and picked up one of these for £30;

£15 worth of 100mm ducting later, and I now have a fume extraction system

Cheers! I'd weld a bit, take my mask off, and then think "Huh... doesn't seem to be working very well " It was only when I watched the vid I realised how well it was working! Rather have them fumes go outside than into me lungs, that's for sure.

Yea for sure..sometimes my eyes sting iff i dont keep opening the doors. what you cobbled together there is a cool idea.

That surprised me when I saw the length of run, I thought you might need more but it looks like it works.

My original idea was to have it vent to the front, which would have been twice the length that it is now, then I realised that it would be easier to break through the wooden soffit at the side, and cut the length.

I think using 100mm duct all the way helped the extraction - there's just under 2m between the fan and the outside world.

Nice I have exactly the same set up in my workshop with 4" tees so I can move the flexi around the shop and I put a magnet on the end so it will stick to the work or me vice! The only annoying thing I found was that the flexi gets loads of holes in it over time from the sparks, I wrapped some old leather from a Gauntlet round it and it helps a lot!

Good idea! Mind you, the flexi's only a couple of quid so no biggie.
Plus, it's good to hear that it just burns holes rather than catching fire

I thought that getting arc eye from youtube was up there with getting pregnant via phone sex?

That's ok it's just arc eye it could of been a lot worse had it not been so well extracted

Sorry, but you have a compressor.

Venturi extraction would do away with with the inline fan. The fan would then not be corroded by the fumes.

I am a great believer in compressed air doing the work.

Basically.........You use a little bit of compressed air to move a lot more still air.. Imagine a blow gun feeding into a 150dia pipe. The compressed air draws air into the base of the 150dia because it creates a vacuum, low pressure, above its' entry.

The compressor may be noisy, but it is not on all the time, it uses precious little volume to expel a significant amount of effluent.

Personally I like the way you have done it with the quiet little fan. No one wants to hear a compressor kicking in and out everytime you want to do a bit of welding.
Must be more efficient on the old leccy bill to run a little fan. I'm well impressed with how effective it zaps up the fume for such a small investment.

Cheers, John Kent was nice enough to send me a PM about it - didn't know what spray transfer was, but I do now! My only defence is that I didn't specifically set the unit up prior to welding as I was only after some smoke generation, but I also didn't realise that I could ruin the tip that way. So some lessons learned

Chuffed with the positive reactions from everyone, though - it definitely works better than I'd thought it would
