whilst I’m certain sorting the spindle would be an easy job for some, it’s beyond my back yard bodging abilities !

That will machine to R8 size directly, so long as there's enough meat behind the taper. What is the drawbar thread?

Your collet superimposed onto R8. The nose of both are exactly the same so all there is to do is bore it out and then cut the taper. I reckon I could do it.

Er32 would also be a good match for that. As its already a front close collet spindle, does it have a through hole for a drawbar?
What thread is the spindle nose?

If you need bigger shanks, R8 would allow a ER40 chuck upto 32mm shank tools, but er32 directly in the spindle will give you comparable stickout to R8.

Mind you now that Kram has pointed out that it's a front-closing collet I'm compelled to ask does it have a through-hole for a drawbar?
