colour blindness, varifocals and welding masks

Varifocals are rubbish for welding I have to wear reading glasses instead, just cheapo ones from ebay or amazon. Don't have your head to close to the weld and get plenty of light on your weld, but not behind you so you get reflections on the inside of your mask

Thanks again all. Having read around the ginour helmet, I've ordered one - different world - cannot believe the difference. I had already deployed the led light advice which is definitely helpful. I have also just discovered french chalk as a means of marking steel which, with the new helmet, i can just about see. Any other suggestions as to marking (are their luminous pens?) and I note the very useful points about grinding a bright edge and using the light to show shadow lines. I am going to experiment with some of the suggestions around magnifiers, off the shelf readers and tom2207's bifocal safety prescription glasses suggestion. Thanks again for so many helpful suggestions, it's also reassuring to know that others have similar "decrepitude" issues but do not let them be a barrier. Thanks for your support.

Follow up question, anyone got a strong suggestion for a good quality cheater lens that will fit my NEW ginour please? Are they all the same in terms of quality, magnification, size and fitting etc please? Ta

Final question: sorry to pepper you but one last question: My instinctive technique is for my body to be close to the work and my elbows bent and the torch relatively close to my body. I think this may be BECAUSE my eyesight (or lack thereof) encourages me to get close up to work WITHOUT my glasses on. It has worried me a bit, I'm not welding all day everyday by any means but I do find I get my head in close to the work as well with the obvious increased concentrations of weld fume etc. I'm just asking if there are other welders out there who find that they can run a bead at arms length without their head stuck over the work? Any thoughts welcome.
