Colour Laser Printers/ copiers

I’m undecided on whether to buy a HP or Brother, for home use.

HP is dearer but consumables are cheaper. Vice versa for the Brother.

Anyone, out there, who can suggest which is the better way to go?

I hate cheap inkjets that don’t last, so no need for them bring suggested.

As a brand Brother has been reliable for me, I have had one of their printers, ( inkjet ) for a long time with little issue.

Does it have to be a combined printer and copier?

Would a printer and a scanner as separate items be a possibility?

I have a Samsung CLP colour laser and use it very infrequently, bought exactly because an inkjet does not last when used this way. It has been faultless. With occasional use, a dust cover is a good idea, an annual blow out with an airline and keep the paper in a sealed, dry container (i.e. do not leave in the printer for 3 months).

brother have better customer service and far better ethics. ie they dont block compatible inks. plus genuine ink is cheap anyway. buy the brother. you wont regret it.

I’ve been told (by a seller of both machines) that Brother toner is much harder to find.

I’ve had two Brother MFPs a long time ago. They were used until worn out (well, either that or not well repaired). I’m leaning towards the Brother.

It will definitely not be an ink jet, whether good or not.

resellers will advise you to buy the printer that they will make the most profit on, not the better machine. just a thought.

I’ve got a HP one, never had problems using compatible toners. It’s been great to be honest and I print quite a lot of work documents.

I’d get the same again - I can’t recall the model number and I’m away with work at the moment but I’ll get it tomorrow when I get back.

My Brother DCP-9015CDW colour laser has been faultless (mostly compatible toners) - I wouldn't hesitate to buy the same again

Neither of the above. Espon EcoTank. Much cheaper consumables, better reliability. We've had some on test at work for a year or so and they are impressive. HP also do their version of Eco Tank. No cartridges, just ink bottles to refill.

The OP was asking for a laser printer, I thought the eco tank was ink jet type?

Brother over a HP everyday of the week. We have a HP that was so much hassle (ink admittedly), kept it as it scans but bought a laser Brother about 3 years ago, it’s been flawless.

Nooo! Tank indicates ink. I’ve already said a couple of times it will be toner, not ink. The Epson LX was better than any inkjet printer we had. The laser printers were, by far, the best - so that is the way I am going. Time for colour as it won’t get used that much. The cost is not really a factor. Quality is.

Too late for me! I’ve gone for a set of OEM cartridges, even after the guy, at the cartridge people site, suggested their in-house brand.

Thanks to all who replied. I have ordered a Brother. A bit more expensive than originally anticipated as I started looking at printers, then printer/copiers and now decided to buy one with a document feeder as well (it was only an extra twenty quid).

I shall look for a dust cover (a good suggestion), but the sticky-out keypad bit might be an issue.

I expect it will cope with appropriate transparencies, too - yes, I’ve seen normal acetate transparencies melted to the drum, on several occasions, in the past.

It will likely out-last me!

That's a 1990's view of inkjets to be frank. The output quality is not discernible from laser these days, it can even be better on the photo quality ones. I have a Kyocera MFP, colour laser which is a proper office quality machine. I also have an Epson Ecotank aimed at home users. Same paper, same results, very different cost.
Oh, and look at the tech in CAD quality A0 plotters, yes, inkjet.
In the 90's I tried one of the first Canon Bubblejets and would agree they were terrible. Now though, often better than laser.

Had a Brother DCP-9010N for about 12 years, it has worked when asked without fuss.
Has printed Clear labels, photo paper, what ever we have thrown at it, it has worked.
The only problem i have ever had is buying the tonner refills and over filled the cartridges that then kicked printer dust of every page you printed, but that was my dumb fault.

Still using it.
