Completed my first repair

Hey Guys,

Started a few threads recently with some questions and finally put it all into practice this weekend.

Last week my wife presented me with the following scratch down our volvo XC90, she miss judged a gap and a fence took a gouge out of the rear door and wing, it was pretty deep.

The end result, I used the non iso 2K clear and I was actually really happy with the finish out of the gun, it's only the 2nd time I've sprayed so while the repair job is far from perfect i'm pretty happy with it. I still need to wet sand the clear and polish but i'll give it a day or two before I do that.

Thanks for all the help and advice it really is very much appreciated.

Will keep an eye on the non iso 2k and see how it holds up.

Lol, it does look like that doesn't it, the masking paper got a little damp the day before

I'll chuck up some more pics once it's flat and polished this was much better than the 1k upol clear I used before, so we'll see how durable it is

I think she was more relieved that we didn't need a visit to a bodyshop more than anything else

As promised though here are another couple of pics now it's been wet sanded and polished. The test will be how well the non iso 2k holds up but to my eye it's indistinguishable from the other clear already on the car.

How did you mask out the rear pillar to prevent you getting a hard edge ?

I just put the masking paper on and turned it back on itself, although there is more masking tape on top I still had a softish edge, it wasn't perfect but was only clearing that far back so just sanded it down and it blended in fine, next time some blending thinner is probably required you live and learn.

What primer did you use and did you use solvent basecoat. Also how long did it take to go touch dry.

Hi Daz,

I just used a rattlecan upol high build primer then Lechler solvent basecoat from paints4u, i had 2 500 watt lights pointed at the panels and they wereactually pretty warm even although it was a bit cold that day, I waited around 15 mins between each coat of basecoat and clear and they were touch dry between each coat

I have bought some of the ud429 unbinder but only used it in primer so far, works well but it's very thick and I needed to thin more than advised to get a good finish but it sanded ok, have some 2k clear so will try some in that as well, hope I can get as good a finish as you did.

Only painting primer at moment but the uni binder sets it off ok. Just a little thick I needed to add more thinners than jawel recommend I mixed 4 parts primer 1 uni binder and 30% 2k thinner. Jawel recommend 4:1 and 10% thinner but its far to thick and orange peels bad at this. I am just using a cheap kestral gun with 2.0 needle for primer. Have over coated it with base coat with 50% thinner as a test and it doesn't react or anything and it seems better than upol p88 I have used before. It was this post that got me looking into it. I wanted to use 2k but can't justify the extra expense of another compressor and mask to spray it.
