Is this sensible or getting silly? I'm a solo blacksmith wanting to blast clean the odd small product & wanting to spray paint garden gates. I don't do cars, industrial work etc.

I'd say only you can answer that. How often you're going to be media blasting, size of the pieces you'll likely be doing etc., all will be deciding factors. In a situation like yours, I'd personally buy a half decent used compressor and gauge from that how you fare. Should give you a better indication of what's suitable over guesswork alone. Overkill rarely hurts though, (bar on the wallet ).

I rang Fiac for advice - they guided me towards a 5.5HP, 200L, 21 Displacement CFM, 17 FAD CFM, 3 phase. £915+ (but VAT registered).

youd buy the 270L 36cfm magnum for that kind of money to give you an idea.
