If you're talking paint spraying, as in automotive repairs, re-sprays etc, you might struggle with a 30 year old 2.2kW piston compressor. Find out what the required Free Air Delivery is for the gun you intend to paint with. And at what pressure. Normally paint guns need very low pressure (relatively) but a decent volume or flow. If you're not using a dryer, filtration etc you might find your paint finishes to be a little sub-par!
