compressor playing up

I have turned the pressure switch down so it cuts out earlier but once the compressor has warmed up and filled the tank 3 or 4 times it starts cutting out again around the 80 to 100psi mark. The motor trys to turn and stalls.

Have you remade the connection to the overload that looks to have been getting very hot?

I pulled it off and cleanned it with emrey cloth it was clean though.

Is it the 2 wires from the cap to check the winding resistances or do I need to dig deeper into the motor like I think I do

I ordered a new cap to rule that out, I hope it is not the motor that would probably right the compressor off

I would say it's the unloaded valve bolted to the compressor tank, that has a rubber washer with a spring to keep it pressed closed. I Have a old Clarke raider/Abac 110v compressor that does exactly that, changed caps and new pressure release valve and it didn't cure it. On checking the valve I found the rubber part it didn't sit well not allowing the pressure to be vented to atmosfere so compressor motor struggles to compress further the air in the tank. Fortunately them brass valves are reasonably cheap and worth changing unless you can cut a new disc out of some hard,thick rubber
I gave up fixing my compressor as I couldn't find the right part in Romania for it and I went and bought a more powerful twin cylinder ABAC compressor...try looking at that before blaming the motor...

The brass one way valve with the unloaded. Are you referring too. If so that was new a few months ago. But it could be faulty I guess. Someone had plugged the old unload pipe with a screw so I replaced the valve and pipe.

I have to resurect this thread as the compressor is still playing up sometimes.
I have fitted a 16amp plug now and shortened the flex just incase it was that.
I have fitted a new cap and crimped new terminals onto the cables.

what is next to check

I renewed it a couple of years ago when I first had the fault

I think your motor is kaput. Partially high resistance in one coil could mean the motor is no longer making 3HP and overheating under load causing it to shut off.
Have you checked your resistances between the windings and any shorts to ground?

As before nrv or pressure switch much cheaper than a new motor. It could be one of the valves in the cylinder head not sealing 100% probably partly caked in carbon causing a back pressure to the pump and stalling the motor. New gasket kit shouldn't cost much and give the valves and seat a good clean or replace. Still quids in compared to a new motor.

That's the valves I'm on about but for sure check gasket availability first. You may want to hold off ordering though till you see the condition of the valves they may need to be added to the order.
Snapon will be a badge get spare parts for the original manufacturer at sensible prices.

I will drag the compressor out of its hiding spot and check a few things first, I will also check the pump for a badge, if no gaskets are avaialble can we go old school with the cereal packets?

A lot of the snap on branded air stuff is / was ingersoll rand

Am I missing something or are these still the same symptoms?
If the tank is being filled up in a reasonable time, then surely the pump is alright? If not, you wouldn't be able to reach cutout pressure on the first try.
