Compressor pump replacement.

Great stuff Migmug. Thanks for the detail.
Took the block off it this morning G and pistons , little ends and bores perfect.
Can see a slight ' smear of melted aluminium on the big end bearing face, so will have a go at heating the casing and drifting one of the mains out.
I have found a few conn rods in the UK, and I guess I can match the main bearings easily enough at my local bearing suppliers.
I'd rather not fit the B2800 for the reasons you state.

So after lots of abuse with a dead blow hammer, a gas torch various punches, and cold chisels. Followed up by dubious use, of even more dubious three legged puller, crank is out. Connecton rod ordered and as I destroyed one main whilst drifting it out, and will probably damage the other pulling it off the crank , I'm ordering to generic bearings local. Still not spent £50.00 and would rather take the time to repair than pay the £ 200 odd for a decent pump unit. Going to Polish up the crank journal with emery cloth, after all! its not a motorcycle engine red lining at 13000 RPM with a £2000 crank assembly.

The more you do the quicker you get, the second one did I used a taper punch, missed the inner part of the bearing and got the punch stuck in the bearing cage for a while.

Fine emory and finish off with 800 and 1500 grit wet dry.

Exactly the same with the taper punch.
I used 600 crocus paper and 1500 wet and dry. Looks OK.

Hi Submariner. I ve seen a few of those pumps. I'm slightly concerned that it's not quite as good as the one Wolf originally fitted though. As far as I can see , the pump Wolf fitted is a B3800 series, Rated 3_4 horsepower. Do you think this pump B2800 series, will produce the same FAD as the B3800 series pump.
The B38 is available, but I can only find one supplier in the UK and it is nearly the price of one of their compressor units. Identical to the Wolf Dakota and a few others I have seen.
Much beter spec than Clarke or Sealey I have found out. The Pump is made for FIAC and I think it may be Italian, although is probably still manufactured in China.
Because I'm limited to 240v domestic supply, and a 2.2KW motor I want to get the most efficient pump I can.
I can source connecting rods in the UK, but still can't see how to release the crank shaft. Problem is I don't see how to release the main bearings from the crank case. I can't get any puller on them from the outside, and pressing them into the casing would still not allow me to slide the rods off.

Not sure, but in 3 hp mode the B38s give 15 LPM more (355 Lpm v 370 Lpm) and increases 12.5 cfm to 13.6 cfm. In 4 hp mode 38s are boosted to 495 lpm and 18cfm.
so I assume the B28s would produce less FAD. 12.5 cfm v 13.6 cfm , as to FAD???
so I assume the 38s are a better?, stronger pump.
I only have single phase power, so the 4 hp B38 version was not viable.
Also not sure if the B38s in 3 Hp mode run off a UK plug, as my 3HP B28 uses 13 mp , some need a 20 Amp single phase ( startup Issues perhaps?)

And the 3 hp B38 version starts at 150 L tank, mine is 50 L , and I dont have the space. Hence did little research on the differrence in pumps. Bluntly anything with a B38 was way too much £s and tank size.

note I had already doubled my budget, just to get a slow running, cast iron barrel 1,250 rpm pump, and quiet belt drive.

HI. The Wolf Dakota uses the B3800, at 3HP. Mine is 90 ltr , it's always ran off a domestic socket , and only ever blown a 13 amp fuse when it seized up the week. I often use it on a 15 metre extension from the house, although the cable doesn't like it much.
It's been a good little compressor . Cost me £ 100. used.

Ok on pump name the pre 2000 ABAC pumps were 2 number, B39 was replaced by the newer B3800 the other pumps gained 00 at the end. B39 was a great pump but now long gone.
The B2800 is a much smaller pump than the B3800 see below, not my image the left hand pump is a B3800B due to the aftercooler, the head and valve plate are the same on both pumps, the head is symmetrical and can be turned 180 to get the outlet the side you need.
The B2800 displacment is smaller due to a shorter piston stroke, the B2800B can have an air deliver close to the B3800 (no B) by running faster at the expense of heat, noise and pump life

my B2800B came with an aftercooler, not sure what it actually does, suppose it cools the air in the tank to make it easier on the pump to provide an increased pressure?? ( always wondered does that not create water as it cools?? )

After cooler would in theory allow more air into the tank as it denser. I'm not sure where the water goes as it's already there isn't it?.
3800 is a little taller due to the increased stroke. Just a little to tall to fit nicely under my bench.
I'm rebuilding the 3800 pump on mine now as I can get Conn rods and Main bearings for a fraction of the cost of a pump or new compressor. The rest of the pump is in surprisingly good condition and I hate scrapping machinery.
I'd recommend that 90 ltr Wolf to any DIY ' fettler'.

Great to see you got it off. I too would definitely repair it if in your situ. As the B39 looks a much bigger beast.
Saw a wolf Dakota 90 L on Amazon for £347. Were ai buying again .. I would definitely look at that.
£130 cheaper even after a huge discount, and the bigger better pump!

are all these pumps the same? ... they definitely look the same or exceedingly similar?
i.e rebranded Wolf, Nuair, Fini, Abac , SGS SIP etc.
you know what I mean. Mine says built in Italy; but is it designed in Italy, motor and pump made in China?? Lol and slapped together in Italy?

Nothing wrong with Chinese stuff. Like you say though depends who's putting it together and wether they bought second quality products or rejects.

can I ask where you got your con rods from? I have one seized and I have snapped it getting it off. would much prefer to rebuild the bottom end if parts are available.

I ended up getting my parts from sealey... Found a sealey compressor with same pump and then a parts diagram and phoned up. They were much cheaper than all of the quotes I had than elsewhere (by about 100 quid).

Looking at it, I would think there is rather more damage than just the con rod. Looks like the crank is rough and likely unserviceable. I not a fan of these pumps - although better than the really high speed cheapies.

I expect any pump of suitable rating could be fitted, but I expect spares for this one are available. Whether it is an economical repair is another issue. I like my cast iron compound pump. Long lived and reliable.

New to this forum. I have a B3800 related question. One of the piston rods and broke. Doesn't look like welding to repair is an option.

There are 2 pistons side by side that offset each other within the same B3800 pump frame. One of the connecting rods has snapped. Can I remove the failing connecting rod and associated piston from the housing, and operate the compressor as normal, albeit with less air produced (only 1 piston operating) to fill the tank?

i would think not as the pump would be running unbalanced ie a bit like an engine running with a cylinder down . also depends on how the valves are set up.
