compressor question

Switched on my ingersoll rand comp today,and went in the house,and totally forgot it was running,then about 40 mins after,i heard a bit of a thud noise,followed by a constant hissing of air,which is obviously the pressure relief valve,but my question is,shouldent it shut off itself before the pressure builds too high.

Thanks bud,but that leads me to another question.Where do i find the device that shuts it down,and how much and how easy to do.Comp is ingersoll rand 3hp 200 ltr twin piston jobbie,oh and its belt driven aswell.Any help is appreciated.

Follow the mains lead from the plug, it should enter a small box, from which there will be another lead to the motor.

This box is the pressure switch. It may have failed but may just need adjusting.

Can you hear any air escaping from it when you switch the motor off. There should be a brief hiss and then silence.

If it carries on hissing then the diaphram may have ruptured.

Adustment is usually done by a nut or screw in the centre of a big spring, loosen the nut slightly to lower the cut-off pressure.

Thanks mate,very useful info.Funny you should mention the photo,as i have actually taken one the other day on my phone,just working out how to upload it now,as i wondered if anyone knew the exact model.Thinking about now,there is a slight constant hiss when the comp is on,and built up a bit of pressure.

Thats a golden oldie !! Don't know the correct designation but it goes back to the '70s, possibly the '60s. Very good units. The pressure switch won't be the same as the modern generic type so it will need a bit more investigation.

So its a classic then lol.Would you also say it should be worthy of running a da sander then in your opinion.

Defo a classic. Regrettably it will struggle to run a DA though. The motor only looks like a 1.5 - 2 HP motor max and 3 HP is on the limit.

those pumps were mainly fitted on vertical tanks and used in cellars by the brewery s before thet converted to bottled gas. nice pumps but dont supply a lot of cfm

nothing realy. speeding it up would hardly increase the cfm and wouldnt do the pump much good

The pressure switch is the box that the gauge is fitted on, if you undo that pipe that is connected just under the gauge and then undo the half a dozen bolts of the flange that attaches it to the box/switch housing you will find a rubber diaphragm, I suspect that will have a tear in it. I would date that compressor more of a 1940-50 model.

If it's 3 hp it might just cope with a decent, low consumption DA. Only way to find out is give it a try.

So i take it that parts are non existant then if its that old,so what would i do.

Well had a look today,and the diaghram is in good nick,so i just adjusted the spring and it now cuts out at 120 psi,is this about right,or should i adjust some more.

Given its age I'd knock it down to 100.

a lot of the older ones cut out at 120 to 150 psi . sometimes its stamped on the pump
