Compressor Rating For Spraying and Recommended Guns

Hi;

Can someone advise me on what type of compressor to use for spray painting?
My son in law has a compressor which he hardly uses and I would like to borrow it for spraying but need to know whether it is suitable?

Also can someone advise what type of guns to use and where from?

I'll be spraying a Mini Bodywork and underside, the underside will probably be done with Stone Chip which I think needs a Shultz Gun.

I am on a tight budget but don't want to buy something that is not up to the task.

From reading it for spraying it looks like I need around 14cfm with a large tank (100Ltr) found this one as an example but its £335.98!!!

Don't believe my Son in laws is anything near that capacity but i'll check it out.

Can anyone recommend a spray kit for body panels / bits n pieces? And a shultz gun for Stone Chip.

Here's my Son in Laws, its an AMAC Magnum Beaver from the info plate it looks like its only 25 Litres, 2HP, but what's the flow rate? is that the L/min (258) on the plate below? If so using this link its 9.11 CFM?

So what spraying would that be OK for small bits n pieces?

What would this compressor be good for?

Would it be worth fitting the compressor to a bigger tank or is the Flow Rate just too slow?

If it would be OK for spraying small areas, can anyone recommend a spray kit or bits to buy?

I used a compressor similar to that with a small touch up spraygun with success although getting water out of the air is also of paramount importance as the built in regulator has no water trap. It would be ok for small amounts of painting and mine also ran the shutz gun ok although I wouldn't like to tackle big jobs with it

I've got one of those. With a length of garden hose jammed on the pickup pipe I've turned mine into an engine hot jet wash. Simply drop the free end into a bucket of hot, soapy water and pull the trigger. Depending on the amount and age of the crud on it you might have to get the nozzle well within an inch of the block, but it's surprising just how far 2 gallons will go.

What do you mean by a small touch up gun? And by small amounts - a door panel?

If I was on a very tight budget I would consider getting the 90ltr Wolf and coupling it up with your son in laws 2hp, should be good enough to do a mini.

I reckon he means an 'air brush'. They're super miniature spray guns - often run from small compressed air cans - and used for producing graphics or art work. They can also come in useful for tiny infill spray jobs followed by blending in the edges with polishing compound.

I ran a devilbiss Sri pro with one similar before I bought a bigger compressor mainly so I could go airfed. I have painted my mk1 mini with the Sri pro just mixed up plenty of paint and kept topping it up, could easily paint a panel with one cup full. But a cheaper version would be a touch up gun off eBay available from about £10

a touch up gun is classed as a pannel gun. its half the size of one u would use for painting complete vehicles in one go

Can't do this in the short term so i'll have to put it on the Christmas List, I have been offered the lend of another small compressor (need to check the specs) so I may hook up the two small ones but my first paint job is the underside for which my Son in Laws may be OK for as it can be done in stages and the overall finish (look) is not too important. Most Shutz Guns seem to advertise as running on low output compressors? I also have access to a no frills spray gun so for the underside I just need to get some primer and U-Pol Gravitex and a Shutz Gun.

- Can't find any cheap Devilbiss Guns - all coming out at around £200??

As far as touch up guns do you mean something like one of these, would the blue HVLP gun be OK?

The Bergen touch up guns get good reviews, but if you are planning painting underside go for a 1mm setup, it's not perfect as a bigger gun would be better but I have found a touch up gun ok with low air useage and very little overspray so I have put up with the shortcomings of using one so I could use an airfed mask without running a 2nd compressor, also most my work after this job will be small parts and repairs so will be better for those jobs. I got my sri pro off eBay brand new for £130 so if you keep looking they turn up. The quality difference is immense here is a pic of my bootlid after denibbing and a light compound. I am pleased with my efforts but using a small gun just takes a little more time
Also please take into account this is my first attempt at painting

Daz - by 1mm setup do you mean a 1mm nozzle? The Bergen Gun on Ebay is £15.99 and looks pretty cool but its got a 0.8mm nozzle, do I need a differnt gun or simply a 1mm nozzle on this gun. The cup is 100ml and the specs say it sprays 100ml a minute so lots of topping up, but that's the price you pay for a small compressor :-)

That looks like a Mini Boot Lid with some Radius Arms in the background, I too am doing up a Mini :-)
