I understand the run it till it stops and whip off belt comments now thanks. That makes sense. Yes that's a ideal way of isolating electrical Vs mechanicalRun it up again until it slows right down then whip the belt off, check to see if it's the motor or the compressor that's gone tight. If they both spin freely then is probably not a mechanical problem with either so must be the motor
To add a conclusion to this.
I removed head all seemed good.
The key was the mental block I had had with separating fault finding the compressor vs the motor. The tip of run it until it bogs down and whip off belt was the slap in the face I needed.
Once hot I could feel there was a tight spot on one of the valves. Not I had previously took off the intake and observed the valves moving when turning over by hand and it all looked good. I had also removed one of the valves to inspect it and it looked fine. No sign of corrosion or anything. Now know (suspecting) it was one of the valves II took apart the other valve that I had not inspected. Cleaned it off and reinstalled. Fired her up and it ran fine until cut off. Dumped air ran fine again. No idea what was wrong but works now.
During this entire saga I picked up another (bigger) compressor cheap off marketplace as a replacement to keep me going in the mena time. I now have tow so am passing the smaller one on to a mate who loves his tinkering and doesn't have one, so although a frustrating journey of stupidity turned out all right in the end.
