converting a V8 engine into a compressor

anyone done it before ?

any idea how much CFM it would produce..

ive seen some that use 4 cylinders to run the engine and the other 4 to compress the air.

what about using a 4 cylinder engine to turn the V8 over.

so all 8 cylinders compress the air


any thoughts.

it might be some use as a conversation piece to say you have built it and its possible but if you want out and out air supply buy a hydrovane or summat similar

Depends how big it is and how fast you run it

well if not an engine to run it ,what about an electric motor ?

have u got a good 3 phase supply and a star delta starter along with a 15hp or bigger motor for half decent blasting. u would need at least 75 cfm minimum

Blasting cabinets use massive amounts of air to operate to a decent standard, I always have s chuckle when I see people say that they have s 3hp compressor and a cabinet, we have all been there and lost !!!

i found that out 40 years ago and had 4 diffrent size compressors before the guy in the hire shop who sold and repaired clemco pots showed me what was needed to run them

At least a modern ecu would realise there was no plug and go into cat saving mode and kill the injector for that cyl so you would not fill your tyre with fuel!!

Require about 100 KW elecy motor a little difficult on single phase- 3phase converter!!.

I had one of those, it's still in my shed somewhere I think. There was an inlet valve in the top so it drew clean air in then acted as a compressor on the compression stroke. It worked well on the old caburettor engines as the manifold vacuum stopped it pulling in fuel mixture. I bought it in about 1968/9 & it came complete with a small glass bottle spray gun.

Yeah know what you mean mate, I just laugh when people tell me they have bought a blasting cabinet cos you just know what's coming next

yes ive found that out. yes the 14cfm one does work but you cant just continually blast stuff
as you soon run out of air and have to wait for the compressor to refill the tank up.


so electric motor is out then LOL

for blasting no compresor is big enough ever.....

engines make for rubbish compresors, no matter how you try and convert them its allways going to be hellish inefficent.

for blasting i went down the disel powerd screw compressor route ( road compressor ) tho as said no compressor is ever big enough i thought 130 cfm was lots once now its just not enough
