converting a V8 engine into a compressor

for blasting no compresor is big enough ever.....

engines make for rubbish compresors, no matter how you try and convert them its allways going to be hellish inefficent.

Many engines have been converted to compressors, it's actually a very simple process and quite easy to do.
They shift huge amounts of air.

Petrol or diesel, they both work, though I think it's harder to get the higher pressures from a petrol without modification as they have lower compression.
It can be done to have half an engine as a compressor, to have another engine turning the engine, or an electric motor (though this is rarely of any use, and won't be an option for the output you require).

VW engines have been a common choice for these, being aircooled saves having to plumb in a radiator. yes ive found that out. yes the 14cfm one does work but you cant just continually blast stuff
as you soon run out of air and have to wait for the compressor to refill the tank up.

u need both. pressure and volume 90 psi is about the optimum for blasting steel and stone .the finish depends on what media is being used. tinware on vehicles ect will be a lot less. the volume cfm will have to match what size nozzle u are using

Pressure is directly linked to flow, if you have a large nozzle you get a larger flow but a lower pressure than if useing a small nozzle.

You need some pressure to blast obviously - if it was only about flow you could use a desk fan and sprinkle media in front of it

It was uneventful. A few things got a bit dusty and I had a little pile of media to sweep up.

Very strange I thought, with around 1,000cfm it should have been better?

i bet u were glad it wasnt at 100 psi i once let go of my blast hose and got peppered up me leg bum and back running out of the blast room

Try it in front of a squirrel cage fan. I can guarantee that'll make you shift.

I've modified a Diesel engine to be used as a compressor before. You need to do a good bit of work to the top end to get it working efficiently. No idea what cfm it was but it could fill a 200l thank from empty to 200psi in seconds.
