Those pumps suffer the head gaskets going between the inlet to pressure side the bridge piece pops out then then take for ever building up pressure then either seize a piston or burn motor out. Just might be worth checking I have made gaskets out of copper but leave the bridge piece wider into the inlet side to keep it cooler and stronger.
Thats why I got mine for 80 quid, if I remember correctly it wouldn't pump higher than 60 psi. bit of klingerit and its been ok since. As you say Norm its very thin between the two sides.

I have one here now for repair due to gasket failure and semi seizure, I have tried making a few different types of gasket for these and the only thing I found, for a pump that is pumping all day long, was copper it helps transfer heat and the gasket can be made wider across the 'bridge', I even remachined the head because it had bowed in the center due I think to the valve plate expanding due to the extreme heat build up, and no central bolt.
On one, I made the gasket below out of copper, so as not to effect compression and above the valve plate out off ally with the idea that ally expands more therefore tightening the head when it gets hot. That compressor has run 10hrs a day since!! overworked really but it does it !!
copper I used was from a old hot water tank which is quite thin.
