Conveyor, project to build one.....

Hi there...


Looking to perhaps fabricate a conveyor...


Its purpose is to move soil / spoil from inside a house to outside...


I am looking at it been powered by a 110v motor, a length of circa 4m and a belt width of 300mm

Has anyone any experience of this, suppliers of rollers, belt gearbox etc?

you will want a reduction gearbox to bring the speed down and the torque up to deal with the heavy soil. IIRC i read somewhere that a treadmill motor and control board was used for a similar application, ideal as it is speed variable and they have stupid amounts of torque from what i can remember. could run that through a 110V transformer if you havent got 240?

depends on how often it will be used, or for how long...plus theres no fun or swearing involved with hiring one, theres loads involved in making one

I could make one with pleasure, I work with conveyors weekly and should i need one myself, occasionally.....I would hire one.
After all when the jobs done when are you likely to use it again?

Getting it to track right will be the fun bit, I learnt lots of new swear words from the fitters in the sandplant at the foundry when they were adjusting the belts

could be for a small business, i would have loved a small portable conveyor for a few jobs i have done digging out gardens and having to barrow it out to the skip through an outhouse and over broken driveways, but couldnt be bothered to build, or even design one

Could you build a small Trebuchet to throw the spoil through the window?

I have made several over the years and belt drove most, because if any thing fouls and locks up the belt which is common when moving stuff like gravel/ earth etc, what can happen is the spoil can end up on the inside of the belt and build up at the end rollers and throw the tracking out, if a the belt is used you can set it to slip and save the motor, You can also buy used ones from machinery sales places, usually complete working units.
an angled brush can be set up on the inside of the belt on the return ie bottom side to brush spoil out before the bottom roller.

also depending on the angle you might need cleated or chevron belt one IE little flaps to make the spoil travel up instead of start rolling down the slope

Yeah like normspanner says you need something on soil (aggregate) conveyors to clean the conveyor. Typically they are called scrapers - done quite a few designs for those in the past. Brushes aren't up to the job, usually it is a metal blade pushed against the belt.

We used to get a build up of moulding sand on the conveyor taildrums so at the end of each shift the labourers would remove the guards and scrape a section then inch the belt round to scrape the next section until one bloke decided it would be quicker to leave the belt running while he scraped it, sadly it was a fatal mistake

I used to used thick nylon brushes like these at a steep angle before bottom roller

All the hire places advertise them....


But when I call them, they ask "what is it?" more often than not!!!! and there is not one available in Lancashire that I can find... there are two 3m ones in Manchester, there is a guy selling them on ebay, I had quite a chat to him on Friday and the earliest he could get one ready id next Friday...

I do like the idea of a tread mill... loads of those in the tip....

I do remember after I left college and was involved with an animal feed mill sometimes there was some fun getting the elevators to run true, adjust the opposite direction to the way you initially think, bit like a flat belt pulley? needs a very slight high spot in the centre to keep the belt on with no guide

I'd see if you can find something already made and adapt that to your needs. What about the type used for roofing tiles, baggage handling or agricultural feed.

We had a conveyor that was over a mile long that actually tracked round a corner using 36" belt. 300hp motors on it. Might be overkill for this project though

It won't really take off mud sticking to a conveyor.

The other way is to use a bottom roller drum made of strips so that there are holes in between that allows the soil to drop through and have air blasting through the centre to blast it out a little like this, but more open and with with open hubs that are also formed by strips, some potato conveyor are like that

Lots of replies....

Thanks again... I have spent quite some time either putting bales on or taking bales from one of those elivators...


I have made a start on the job... must of dug up and slung through the open living room window circa 20 tonnes of broken concrete and clinker... but towards the end as you dig down it does get hard to lift up to window height.... and not to mention the walking to and fro in the room....


Then there is the issue of getting the new aggregate into the room....


I did think of a large vacuum would suck out the clinker.... but likely would not handle the new aggregate back into the house to fill in the floors


I have been keep in a close eye on ebay but as yet to find the answer...
