Good info on the Ammonia vapours thanks-but as mentioned before I had reasonable success with heating brass quickly to red and then (carefully timed) blasting it with oxy and it made an oxide layer that was 'servicable' but I have concerns about the bright brass that lies beneath. If I boiled up a pot of morning **** and put the screws in the veg steamer would it do the trick you think?

You could use antiqueing fluid off the bay, I used some here on a brass sign

Re dome head, use countersunk, drive them in so far the cut the head of and use a rivet snap to dome the head

Braze a small copper 'slug' (10mm bar) to the top of a steel countersink woodscrew, grind/turn to shape and cut slot.

It would need to be a copper or copper alloy screw, (brass, bronze etc.), otherwise it would rust like nobody's business. I believe Oak is one of the acidic hardwoods.

So I bought some silicon bronze domeheads from Seaware in the end. They were reasonably priced for 10ea of sizes 6,8,10 and 12-£21 delivered. Currently working on trying to get them looking like the top 2 screws in Wendlespanwicks photo. Thanks for the advice and getting me sorted out in the end.
I'll post some pics when I get around to fitting them...
