Bit late to this thread, have used a few different brickies over the last 10 years, best 2 were sorta retired guys in their early 60's charged me £80 a day and I laboured for them. Workmanship was 1st class and they didn't hang about either

the ones i know of have all done work at side of me or been on the job ive been on so seen there work first hand

i pass those people around on the jobs im doing and hand there card over to the owners im working for most of the time im left to organise them as well as ask them for a price for the job in hand

due to the knowledge of vouching for them i know there work is good and also they vouch for me at other places of work

many a times work has passed all by word of mouth and ive worked in many places

ive worked both at my own jobs and also as a labourer over the years for many trades probably why i like the trade so much as its so varied with its jobs

I don't advertise and am double-booked for first quarter 2019, decent work at sensible prices is always in demand.
I've worked alongside a plumber, a sparky, and 2 gas installers, and I'm happy to pass their contact details on if needed (shame the sparky's are no longer working). The flip side is I get a few calls from them asking if I'm available.

A lot depends where I'm working. A chap I met in North Wales (a cheap area) asked me if I'd work on his midlands (expensive area) home - and charge him Welsh rates as it would be a lot cheaper ! No harm in asking but he isn't high on my "to do" list...

Down here in Devon.
Had a patio door and window removed from the garage and bricked up, as well as a couple of topping stones from the wall,

1 pallet of bricks and consumables,
2 days graft,
Came in at just shy of £700.

A short price to pay for a solid garage.
Did a nice job at it also. All lines up right and cut in nicely.

I sometimes do joinery plumbing plastering for customers as its uneconomical to hire other trades separately when someone can do the lot in one go

A lot will depend on whether you are employing labour through a company or as a one man band, I cant send out a qualified guy in a truck with RAMS,insurances,tools and equipment for less than £250 a day +vat, same guy working freelance out of the boot of a car would probably be happy with £120 pd cash in hand for the same job, all down to overheads really. On the same token why would you call in Balfours to repair a fence panel

Я бы подумал, что мой русский - это дерьмо - был английский солдат до 1992 года в Берлине - Checkpoint Charlie - только начал говорить об этом снова - когда восточные европейцы прибыли в Норфолк, написав это - очень тяжело для меня!
